Couple of questions for your opinions

1) A 9 year old toyota over the period of 2 months develops a minor oil weep from the lower/engine cover/sump area.
The repair job card states,Clean/degrease engine reseal cover. reseal sump. remove oil filter ,repair sump.
What conclusion if any would you draw as to the cause of the oil weep?
2)A fuel leak is reported in a car by a person who had just filled their car to the brim and is calling from the petrol station. They then don't report a fuel leak again for 12 months when again they have filled their car to the brim at a petrol station
What conclusion would you draw.?
A car has been owned for 6 months and driven 7000km in that time
The owner takes the car to the franchise mechanic who advises the owner to replace the spark plugs as they are due for replacement within 10000km according to the service schedule.
Who should pay for the plugs?

Theres no wrong answers--- just wonder what you guys think.

1) Not enough info on job card, after degreasing and testing, where was leaking?
2) What did they do after first leak, if nothing then it sounds like it is overfilled to the point where it runs on the ground, unless a return pipe is faulty?
3) Spark plugs to me are like oil, filters, washer fluid, ie useable items that need scheduled or regular replacement.

What seadubya said, although going just on the evidence presented, I would think the leak originally came from the cover or the sump they resealed.

scenerio 1 - Dealer pays.
Scenerio 2 - Customer pays.
Scenerio 3. Definitely customer pays!

1. 'Repair sump' arouses suspicion. Why repair it? Has it been clobbered in which case that's why it now leaks. If you're sure it was okay when sold customer at a fault. How to prove?
2. Over filled or return pipe clogged up maybe. Get it in and clean return pipe in case?
3. Owner pays its part of servicing schedule.

Glad I'm not a dealer!

Sorry guys wrong words from job card
1) A 9 year old toyota was inspected by a reputable company and certifiied as being leak free. 6 months later the vehicle is being serviced and an oil leak is found. The job card to repair the oil leak states.
remove oil filter, remove sump, remove engine cover, carry out repairs to engine sump.reseal sump, reseal engine cover
What conclusion if any would you draw as to the cause of the oil weep?
2)A fuel leak is reported in a car by a person who had just filled their car to the brim and is calling from the petrol station. They then don't report a fuel leak again for 12 months when again they have filled their car to the brim at a petrol station

Going on the worded order
#1: suspect damaged sump which in turn can damage the gasket depending on the exact damage done.
Q: why was the sump gasket resealed before spotting the damaged sump which needed removing to be repaired?

#2: Some cars can't be filled "to the brim" without spillage (rare with modern vehicles but . >)
A: Check model for fuel filling instructions & overflow system details.
If instructed to NOT overfill/ brim the tank, advise customer of this manufactures fact.
If the car can be filled to the brim as allows by the manufacture, advise the customer to get it checked ASAP.
If you are feeling generous, do it for them bearing in mind it's now 12 months ago since 1st reported but not acted on by the customer

#3: 7000kms later it's the customers problem, car has no recent history on or 7000kms off the yard of this type of problem till now.
Commonly known as "regular maintenance issues"

seadubya, May 21, 10:15am
1) Damaged sump seems to be the issue, comes down to quality of first inspection, if 100% positive that no damage or leaks were present then buyer is trying to get someone else to take responsibility for their mishap, pretty common unfortunately.
2 & 3 same as post #3

I'd be wanting to see what was actually wrong with the sump before commenting, whether it was external damage or not. Unless one of the fuel or evap lines in the upper part of the tank or the filler neck had perished, both the second issues are owner responsibility.

1) Need more info.
2) Owner is a muppet
3) Owner is a muppet

gazzat22, May 21, 11:38am
If the owner, spelt" clown" thought it was the dealers responsibilty he/she should have taken it back to the dealer for inspection and repair, once he took it to a 3rd party he lost all legal rights IMO.The dealer should have been given the opportunity to inspect it .!Spark plugs are just a general running cost like tyres.!

(2) - Our 2012 Ford Fiesta does that if you don't follow the instructions for the capless fuel filler and pull the nozzle out as soon as the pump clicks off. Wait a few seconds and it does not leak.

gilco2, May 21, 4:15pm
I would ay in first case should have cleaned first then rechecked in day or 2 to ascertain leak. More than likely cam cover leaking and running down. next 2 cases fully on car owner

kazbanz, May 22, 1:54pm
Heres my issue
1)there was no oil leak of any sort. Then months later there was from low on the engine.
"coincidently" the sump needed to be repaired. I can't think of any explaination a sump would need repair except that the sump has had an impact.

yogibearz, Jan 19, 5:01pm
Agree totally. It needed repair. Why ? Probably damaged. I believe on the info given they are all the owners costs.
