Flying mile?

attitudedesignz, May 23, 2:49pm
Is there any flying mile (flying 1.6 kilometer doesn't sound right lol) events in NZ?

Besides ones held by local car clubs.

Also further to that question is there any old disused airstrips in nz that could be used? Maybe Ohakea? That doesn't get a lot of use haha.

No idea, but back in the days before OSH become a festering sore in many's side there used to be a few down this way.
Last one I went to was MC club doing a flying 1/4. Bout 8 years back.

There was talk of trying to get a landspeed record run on the new tepuke bypass road thats being built but i bet nztsl or whatever they call themselves this week would say no in a big way

In Australia there is the Temora 1000 - titled as Australia's fastest runway race.
https://youtu.be/4wAfht9r5Wg What are the 'lesser' NZ runways? Woodbourne, Hokitika, Waiouru etc https://youtu.be/uhhIByRQbIc (Ashburton - 1970s) Look like most places in NZ are better suited to a flying kay ( 1km) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hokitika_Airport

Big issue is getting public liability insurance to cover an attempt/event especially if a private individual as opposed to a organisation with a proven track record (no pun intended). Ohakea won't allow their facility to be used after being burnt in the past. Amisfield airfield in Tokoroa (council controlled) are more amenable and track hire is reasonable as long as you can front up with the insurance cover.

you'd think places like wanganui would be ideal, is it 2.7km of runway?, used about twice a week, plenty of spectator viewing sites etc, and they have quite a good motor sport population interest

That would take some balls in a Commodore Ute.

Bugger that LOL.

+1 to Amisfield have run my ZX12-R there several times with NZDRA.

Tok only has 850m of seal,so not much good for speed run unless you don't plan on stopping at the end.

Your comment about Wanganui airport being used twice a week is a little inaccurate.
