Which engine is the best ? 2000 4.6 Range Rover or 2000 4.0 Discovery

They are both the same Buick/Rover V8 aren't they, just one has more displacement than the other. How much better can one version of the same engine be from another? I guess the 4.6 has an increased bore that would mean thinner cylinder walls which could wear through on higher mileage vehicles.

OP, the motors have in general not been too problematic on either, but the Range Rover has many other issues that the Discovery never (or uncommonly) suffered by comparison. Suspension, electrics, ECU's all come to mind as issues very common on the RR. Still, they're cheap as chips so why not?

How can they be "cheap as chips", when you have to buy a Landcruiser and tandem car trailer as well, just to get it home again every time you want to drive it!

Yes I have a 100 Cruiser but its a lot of money sitting around when I only use it for towing at Christmas time. I wanted do down trade on something that will tow well.

Test drive both, my 97 disco 4.0 tends to be a bit wandery in the steering, despite best efforts to fix(heavy damper/adjusted steering box etc) and local WOF shop owner says it is better than most, but ya do get used to it if used enough. However now that my engine is running really sweet after lots of new electrics, mates and myself believe it is way faster than a rangy 4.6, but just as hungry. Go for a converted to non airbag rangy would probally be best value, and more comfortable and friendly to drive.

The 4.0 is a better balanced engine, and arguably less trouble than the 4.6. but there's a lot more to consider between a Discover and a RR than just the engines. The RR has heaps more to go wrong.

Then you should buy a 4.8 petrol Patrol. You'll own one for mid teens and they are very reliable, and a similar size to your Cruiser. I have no idea why the Toyotas are worth double, or triple the price of a Patrol. There's no good reason for it.

After owning 14x Discovery's and 4x RR for the practical side go for the Discovery. If you want more HP and comfort it has to be the RR, id have the RR anyway to be honest providing the air bag suspension has been removed. Look at a 2000/2001 Discovery fitted with the ACE handling, they are unreal in the corners for such a big truck. Iv had 3x TD5's all with the ACE kit and yep id have another but they are a tad old now for me.
Only main consistent fault on the later TD5 is the XYZ switch, they have a design flaw in that the air-con drips onto the swatch and over time corrodes inside - it will then flash (lights on the gear selector) and go into limp mode. Its an easy replacement part, more a pain than anything else. To avoid it just extend the drip line pipes and job sorted.
If you get the older Discovery have the viscus fan removed and have an electric fan kit fitted, they go like a scolded cat with this mod, also get the cats taken off, also a cheap mod giving more HP.
