Is it worth $2500

I haven??

jason_247, Jun 23, 8:15am
id pay 2.5K if it had the highest spec engine. which is the 1.6l 20v

for the smaller 1300cc id say its a little overpriced.

kms arent to bad
They arent a commonly rusty car so id be wondering what led to rust around windscreen? living by the ocean?

i think for that money you should be able to get a better jap car with better specs around that age. or a similar speced car to this but closer to the year 2000

intrade, Jun 23, 8:18am
without looking 2500$ is basically your 600$ car from the 1990s
like anything you need to check things and make the desition , i actualy just did look a older toyota is bullet proof electronic wise but rust and accumulated neglect will get the better of it eventually. most die of rust . front windscreen A pilar is the toyotas problem areas.
i have a 1995 corolla with 325000km and its driving as new still i give it another 100 tausend befor it will be possible to worn out or the automatic 3 speed will start to finaly fail on my one.
and i would not sell my one for less then 2500$

tony9, Jun 23, 8:18am
If I wanted one like that, I don't think I would be comfortable paying $2K or more.

jmma, Jun 23, 8:19am
It is still a baby, Yes for trouble fre motoring (o:

frytime, Jun 23, 8:24am
Over priced! Can pick those up $1500 with a few more kms. Cambelt probably due (every 5 years)

intrade, Jun 23, 8:27am
i tell my clients to find a 2000 toyota with old engine under the bonnet this way they get 1 year wof and toyotas bullet proof high emission! engines.
toyota have stuck to the same thing for a long time its what made the area of almost seemingly indistructuble vehicles. But emission rules forced change upon them and then it went down the hill started in 1988 with the emission crap added to the hilux diesel engine , for petrol the rules are different not as tuff till the mid 2000 from there onwards it wont matter what you buy it will all be the same nightmare crap no matter what make you buy.
Toyota had to change automatic transmissions to have better control over gear shift by the emission monitoring equipment. its all because of emission rules why it all fails premature more and more and more crap has to be added for more and more tighter emission laws.

floydbloke, Jun 23, 8:51am
Thank you all. Going by the advice above it does appear too high so I'll probably give it a miss.

tgray, Jun 23, 9:05am
$2500 reflects the fact it is probably the most desirable 1994 car of all the Japanese hatchbacks in NZ and ticks a lot of boxes
Toyota
hatch
NZ new
manual
good Ks for age

$2500 seems about right.
Yes, you pay a premium for a good Toyota Corolla.
And remember, it's in Wellington, not Auckland.

gmphil, Jun 23, 9:06am
I wouldn't say that ! ^^^
before u write of do a full search here on tm for all Toyota corolla under 2000 model and compare apples to apples
not my cupa tea but new wof service history and cambelt done $2500 .
can u do betta ?

robotnik, Jun 23, 10:10am
Get the Japanese import version, that way you should have airbags, and maybe ABS. Also aircon and electric windows. I'd want a first car to have airbags personally.

thejazzpianoma, Jun 23, 11:36am
These were the last of the NZ assembled (by the coast in Thames) vehicles. I was told by someone who worked there at the time, that when there was industrial action, parts would be left unprotected and would rust. The rust was apparently just wiped/sanded off and then painted.

Would explain why most are not rusty and some are VERY rusty.

jmma, Jun 23, 1:17pm
Toyota shut Thames assembly down in 1998 if we want correct facts (o:
Probably wiped rust of KE70's

poppajn, Jun 23, 2:29pm
A 1998 Corolla with 51,000 just sold with a dealer here for $5000, it was immaculate and they had a lot of interest
Also a dealer has a A50 at the moment for same price, it will be interesting to see how long it sit's

trogedon, Jun 23, 3:15pm
Agreed. Its worth it. They don't come up with that few kms and they're bulletproof.

msigg, Jun 23, 3:43pm
Yes It would be a good car to buy, simple, reliable, so what if its $200 too much, next car that's cheaper could be a whole lot of trouble. Nissan pulsar is also great car, 1996 to 1998 easy cheap motoring.

sw20, Jun 23, 5:01pm
For that price it should be the GL model with the 1.6 litre injected 4AFE motor.

I have a 1996 red GL that I'll be selling shortly. 280km, cambelt etc done at 244km, newish tyres, headlining replaced, new Pioneer CD player with AUX in. It has the colour coded bumpers not the budget spec black bumpers as well. I'd be looking at around $2500, cash talks though.

goodcat, Jun 23, 7:54pm
have a friend with the same year an model,is now close to 400000ks'. has had it for years an has spent next to nothing on it,super reliable car

trogedon, Jun 24, 7:14am
Yours is so different to the one posted the two can't be compared. Apples vs pears.

sw20, Jun 24, 3:53pm
It's the same car with the better engine and painted bumpers.

gmphil, Jun 24, 5:13pm
its a nashi same as other one but with more fruit !

kdcentralni, Jun 24, 5:36pm
I sold a 96 xl for $1700 hardly any interest 325k on it tidy, but the headlining and rust around the moulds on roof and hatch is common and the hatch can rattle at higher K's.

kiwikid2005, Jun 24, 5:39pm
I won't comment on the price but we do have one of these as our other 'round town run-about for the household. although it's a 1995.

As mentioned. these ones are the 'EE100'. NZ new. assembled in Thames. we've had ours since 1997 or thereabouts. no rust. and not a single major repair since we've had it. just the usual wear and tear items. tyres, batteries, wipers, bulbs. has been serviced each WOF since we've had it. well, maybe we missed one service once. but it's been treated very well otherwise. doesn't have any bells and whistles. power steering is about as flash as you're gonna get. but as people have mentioned. what this car lacks in 21st century tech. is made up for in absolute bullet-proof reliability. well. in my near 20 years' worth of experience thus far anyway.

strobo, Jun 24, 5:41pm
The market is flooded with front wheel drive crap. Its not even worth even 500 hundy!

kcf, Jun 24, 5:48pm
1300 carby versions are pretty basic cars, personally I wouldn't buy one. I've had a few of the earlier 1300cc carb'd Corolla's, and they were quite rubbish compared to the 1600cc version.

Oh, and yes, they definitely rust, even the NZ new Corolla's of that shape.
