Bogging up metalwork

It's not a car but I'm sure people here will know.
I have a large copper lamp that is very beaten up. I want to paint it black.
What do I fill the hollows with before painting?
It looks a bit like this but is much more beaten up.

I have bog with hardener, but I find that's hard to spread flat.
I also have Selleys Permafilla. I don't know if that will last OK in the weather.

Careful, they are actually worth good coin. If you don't think you can do it properly.

The lamp has been altered from the original, with steel rods that have rusted away. I have replaced all the steel with copper rods, and replaced all the copper clips that hold the glass in.
I usually do a fine job of metalwork, but have not done a lamp before.

Go to your local auto repair supply store and get a can of puttycote.

Easy sanding and applying, this should do the job for you.

Yes something like that looks good. The guys at work may have something, since it's their job to paint things.

If it genuinely is made of copper then I wouldn't be bogging it at all.
Copper is a lovely material to work with so I would be taking the lamp to bits and massage it back into shape. Use lots of smaller/lighter taps with the hammer and you will be amazed at the results.

Here's the lamp at the moment:

It's had years of painting and alterations. I have removed all the rusty steel and soldered it back together with the aid of a wooden jig to hold it in the right shape.
It would be quite a job to polish all that but I could try. If I polish it then someone will probably steal it and melt it down.
There are half a dozen other lamps that are painted black and are not copper.

Just use the bog you've got.
Don't try and spread it flat - put it on a bit proud and sand it flat.

I might polish the copper. I can always paint it later.
I have made this out of some scrap copper and some 50mm brass rod:

I polished the top bit.

I'll polish the rest.
