Safe to ride bike over the Harbour Bridge with Pam

Have had a few people (all non riders) who said I should avoid ridding over the Harbour Bridge tomorrow with this storm but just wondering if any riders on here have any experience with this?

I have an experienced biker friend whos had a few big scares riding on the Harbour Bridge in good weather,a strong gust was enough to make him scared. Be safe:)

If winds strong you should avoid it if possible. If really really strong and blustery don't even think about it! A steady wind is manageable on a bike, it's gusts that upset it, and gusts can come from passing truck. So avoid passing or if posdible being passed by anything big. Keep speed with something large if you can. If a steady wind is blowing from right you lean the bike to the left, and lean your body opposite to the bike into the wind. This way there is less chance of wheels being swept away from under you.
But don't fight it hard, try to relax your shoulders and allow bike some slack to move a bit.
Sorry if I'm preaching to the knowledgable, sounds a bit of a lecture.

Up untill buying this yard I did a few years of commuting over the bridge -mostly on a bike. My advice is DONT do it. This is based on personal experience doing the bridge on days that weren't even a cyclone. My rule of thumb was---flags up Im gonna be ok--if they pulled the flags down Im going the long way round (north western and upper harbour) I can tell you for certain --the flags are down. Use the longer option and go round. Actually sod that-Look DONT GO ON THE BRIDGE TOMORROW. Want my quals ? 35 years riding experience -on road/off road and race track. Sorry don't normally do that but so ya know this aint coming from a wannabe.

Thanks for all the advice guys - especially the life jacket. Might just play it safe and take the bus.

Very sound advice there. I remember getting blown into the side of an old Birkenhead Transport bus while riding my T100 over the bridge to Uni in the early 70's. Would have been interesting if the bus wasn't there to say the least!
