A stag that's not

Sticking a TVR 5 litre engine in, good. Cutting off the top, bad.

mohaka, Dec 19, 5:29pm
Don't like the look of the windscreen surround, too bulky on top & those chunky edged bits of wood around the sides, not to mention the colour. All looks a bit amateurish to me.Could have made a drive train improvement as well if you're going to go that far.

geedubu, Dec 19, 5:46pm
The short answer is no.

morrisjvan, Dec 19, 5:53pm
I saw one of these just the other day in chch, had the soft-top up, looked for all the world like a boy scout had pitched his tent on top! looked horrendous

Some serious time and money has gone into it but it still an odd modification on an odd vehicle. If the work was as good as claimed it would be certed and road legal first and not being let go as is for that cheap. I'd be wanting to know why this hasn't happened, preferably in the form of an engineers report.

trogedon, Dec 19, 7:16pm
Totally agree. Just blah.

socram, Dec 19, 7:26pm
"Very little required to get cert".

That is exactly what I thought with mine - took another 2.5 years.

andrewcg53, Dec 19, 7:26pm
Why bother they have killed any value it had and just badly done, I bet it is only worth scrap metal price.

dublo, Dec 19, 7:47pm
Someone converted a 2500TC into a 2-door coupe some years ago - well done by an experienced panel man - and there would have been none of the structural integrity problems that a convertible would have unless it had been correctly strengthened. The steel roof and the B and C pillars are there for good reason! I believe it was eventually sold overseas.

Converting Triumph Heralds is a different story - they have a separate chassis - and there are lots of them about which have just had their steel roofs detached and a hood fitted. Give-away details are the shape of the door window glasses, the length of the panel between rear seat and boot lid and, often, the tent pitched on top!

trogedon, Dec 19, 8:11pm
The lack of crossed flag badges too.

richardmayes, Dec 19, 9:20pm
I've seen real old coachbuilt hearses and shooting brakes from the 1930s to 60s at car club events and on the road that look worse!

A Stag costs $12k to $15k, whereas a 2500 with rust in the body is worth about a dozen piss. If you had the skills and a bit of creative vision, why wouldn't you?

That colour scheme though.

richardmayes, Dec 19, 9:33pm
I wonder if a Ford Falcon engine and trans would fit in one of these? They're pretty cheap at car wreckers everywhere. Triumph 4000, would probably go quite well.

franc123, Dec 19, 9:42pm
Ex Range Rover V8 is what you would put in, at least its reasonably light.

mischieftam, Dec 19, 9:45pm
more of a gag than a stag.

mohaka, Dec 19, 9:51pm
Engine conversions I've seen-327 chev,Leyland P76 and lots of rover V8s.
Herald with a datsun 1200,dolomite motors.

mike1345, Dec 20, 6:18am
I wonder what that poor old Triumph ever did to that owner?

mrfxit, Dec 20, 6:27am
The Triumph engine is a very short engine.
Pretty much no other straight 6 cylinder will fit in there.
The early Holden 6's are shorter then Falcons & those won't fit either unless you remote the radiator & fan AND still have to cut the front or recess the firewall

shakespeare6, Dec 20, 6:38am
All that timber around the back seat makes it look like a boat not a car

whqqsh, Dec 20, 6:46am
its not a Stag, it's more a deer. like 'Oh dear'

bjmh, Dec 20, 8:25am
ha ha it reminded me of one of those boats the yanks made in the 50's. heaps of teak etc. good luck certing it

socram, Dec 20, 8:33am
I have a pic of a local one with a Nissan straight six being fitted,

Rover V8 is the emotionally logical swap, being another BL engine.

Probably the most amazing car I have actually driven on the public road (albeit just around the block) is a very well sorted Stag with TVR 5 litre engine fitted. I'd happily swap all 3 of my older classics cars for it.

geedubu, Dec 20, 2:57pm
But this didn't start out as a Stag. It started as a Triumph sedan. Nice but not that expensive in its own right, but a complete fail as a chop top.

trogedon, Dec 20, 3:50pm
Not in the same leaque. They're both worth doing.

mopar63, Dec 20, 4:07pm
yea need to be a better colour, get rid of the wood capping and then . lengthen the bloody doors !,always the bit that needs doing but people don't do it,longer doors ,use a laminated screen ,they can be chopped down, or even just a stag screen and modify the surround ,and it would look ok.

russell.s.c, Dec 20, 4:19pm
I have an uncomfortable feeling that it won't get certified.
