Stubborn crank pulley

Apart from cutting it off what is a good way to remove a stubborn crank pulley have emptied a can of crc. The wd 40 is not far behind. Stripped the puller and have been levering for hours. Is on a 3l in a hiace.

Decent puller and a bit of heat from oxy torch, taking the front pulley off will help, as would leaving it overnight to really let the fluid soak in. You will probably bugger the front crank seal heating it but its probably in need of replacement anyway. Have fun.

Wurth Rost-Off or Wurth Blue Freezing spray (nothing else comes close, forget CRC and WD40) shock it by hitting with a hammer and spray again. Put a bit of pressure on it with the puller (or a new one) and hit it.
If that fails I'd resort to heat on that, put a bit of pressure on it with the puller and heat it (Mapp gas will do it).
You'll be wanting a new oil seal and maybe pulley (cheap from the Mount Shop).

Are those pulleys the torsion damper type with the rubber insert?

Heat may fry the rubber.

rctr, Sep 9, 4:34am
Harmonic balancer is off that wasn't on properly to begin with trying to get inner gear off

strobo, Sep 9, 4:47am
Cut it off ,its powder metal crap anyway avoid forcing it , you dont want to damage the crank keyways! They key way in the crank will be fine, you'll need all new parts such as harmonic damper pulley (improved quality ),Keys and cambelt crank sprocket, crank seal , and refit with some loctite. replace belt kit & water pump, check the spacer washer behind one of the belt idler pulleys. it is a certain thickness and easily lost make sure it goes back on . double check crank /cam /pump timing and belt tension after fitting belt turning at least a full revolution , back and forth to check the marks. remember TDC on the compression stroke for base timing , ie valves rocking on nmbr 4 cyl.

This is route I'm thinking have got new keys as damper was loose and flogged them out. Was fishing for any other ideas before I take to it with a grinder

wayned, Sep 9, 6:05am
Cutting it off will be the only option, they are very tight.

bjmh, Sep 9, 7:06am
does it have 2 threaded holes in it ?

sr2, Sep 9, 7:53am
Ouch! as I recall the Hiace had a bad habit of loose harmonic balancers flogging out key-ways and righting cranks off.

Where's Intrade when you need him?

poppy62, Sep 9, 7:57am
Hydraulic (grease) puller is what you need ( Sykes Pickavant etc). Set it up, tighten and a tap with a hammer/ or some heat on the front of the pulley usually does the trick.

rctr, Sep 9, 8:08am
Crank appears good Hasn't damaged key way just key but now inner pulley is corroded solid to the crank

intrade, Sep 9, 8:51am
Heat with oxy acetilin and a cold spray on crank
Also rember the pulley temd to fall apart on rubber joints sold my hilux one and seen it on mitsi delica also split and spin with no real drive

The inner you wont get this off unless you have a inductive coil heater whom only heat up 1 part with induction heat cost 600 us doller plus shipping for one of them don't destroy crank seal behind the rusyef cam sprocket

Believe it or not in the old days a 50/50 mixture of acetone and waste ATF used as a penetrating fluid is brilliant for "un freezing" any parts so affected.
It's even more effective than the fancy penetrating oils touted about today.
A product called "Kroil" is a good one to mention.
Been there many times and always worked for me, secret is give any penetrating fluid time to actually penetrate.
It's an idea to even fit a suitable puller and tension it up and leave it on there over a day or so.
Patience is a worthwhile thing to practice at certain times but today's bottom line $$$$$ grabbing expense tends to preclude common sense rather? Good luck.

Do it like a ring gear , cut slot with grinder then a good whack with cold chisel & get new 1 . At least wont bugger the crank nose ?

rctr, Sep 9, 1:08pm
Yup this is going to be my method

strobo, Sep 9, 3:35pm
+1 :-) 5min job! Cordless angle grinder ,fitted with a new cut off disc ,only have to cut on an oblique angle obviously that's all ya can do ,and only so deep , cold chisel is the trick , a short sharp tap and that will release it. Some like Mazda /Ford are jap loctited on at factory and will pull threads before they think about moving! They recommend dismantling the sprocket/pulley in other words cut it off and fit a new one.Along with a new crank seal.

strobo, Sep 9, 3:44pm
tis in a van ,the radiator and the rest of that crap will need to come out to get that puller in there! also will only pull the threads if it's that tight on there.always start off with right puller for starts(the small screw thread 6" multi fit puller) if it aint going good for ya then is the time to cut it off.The new improved parts are reasonably priced from Toyota and all available.

Poxy fibre Cam gear boss on 186 holdens had to have the cold chiisel treatment i did 2 of them pullers wouldnt do it nor heat /crc .

moggyman, Sep 10, 5:17pm
. good idea if you do this method is to centre pop and drill a hole thru the boss right above the key before using the cold chisel. Remember one guy doing a homer gave the chisel a big whack and broke the camshaft. bugger!

strobo, Sep 10, 6:27pm
Good suggestion there :-) the hammometer is a dangerous tool sometimes lol.
The camshaft is usually a taper end that comes away good.Just to mention guys always check the pulley/ sprockets as well closely for any cracks when fitting belt kits ,And the 1c/2c diesel inj/pmp pulley is bigger and more prong to cracking on removal ,they are beggars! Sometimes I've had them off and noticed some cracks forming, especially with toyotas ,

tweake, Sep 10, 6:38pm
common fix for the toyota 3l cranks pulleys if the keyway/crank is damaged is to cold weld the pulley on.
heating it to break the epoxy would be a good way to start.

when you get it off, loctite the new one on. with loctite you can still get it off with a bit of force if need be.

LOL; you forgot to mention the imminant possibility of the sky falling on our heads!

strobo, Sep 11, 1:34pm
Might be alright for jump starting the "old fella into action "on cold frosty winters months too ;-) Ouch.
Seriously though that is a useful looking item for the tool room .I can think of a few uses but there are other options & would rarely get used. & is somewhat pricey!
