Legnum smoke and tappets noisy

realtrader1, Jan 17, 2:16pm
A friend has bought a 1997 1.8L Legnum with the 4G93 GDI engine with 230 km on the clock. I asked him how it is going and he said it is using oil (can't say how much sorry). I started it, left it idling for a minute or two, when revved there is a reasonable amount of smoke (bluish grey) which went away once the engine cleared it away. (1) What grade of oil and brand would be recommended. (2) Is it possible that it's had a synthetic or high detergent oil in there is there and so a possibility of improvement by pouring in an oil someone might recommend? The oil in the engine looked new so it maybe that it is being replenished often due to the oil burning. (3) Is there an additive people can recommend? I saw someone say Nulon stop smoke? Any other ideas? (4) The tappets are noisy but as it gets hotter sometimes they stop tapping for a while and start up again. Are they hydraulic lifters in that engine? Is there an additive that can be recommend to quieten them or an additive that might help oil consumption and tappets? Any ideas would be great. He's a nice guy but sadly, I think someone saw him coming. but hey I don't know how it was advertised etc. but want to help him out if I can.

That's mitsi for ya. Oil I would put 15/40 cheap oil in it as it will just burn it anyway. There is a product for the tappets pro8 or ml8 or something. The mitsi dealer will know. Just spend as little as possible on it and save all your money for a new car.

If it was advertised as a 1.8 GDI Legnum (not withstanding the 230km! ) that in itself should have been the warning. Proma MBL8 worked on my cousins but again only for a couple of thousand km at the most. I would honestly either run it till it dies or cut your losses (which shouldn't be much hopefully) and $1 reserve it, move on.

Thanks for the ideas so far. Any ideas about the lifters are they hydraulic? Any further ideas appreciated for any / all of the points listed above? Cheers.

More news to hand: oil consumption is approx 1L per 1000km over a 4 week period. He is currently using 20W50

sounds like the rings are stuffed and may have a leak.

No its a Mitsi, this is normal

Well at that rate it shouldn't be on the road now days anyway, 40 years ago maybe, either burning it or leaking out somewhere, both are wof fails.

No doesn't appear to be leaking oil ie onto the road.

What is the wof regulation on smoke how do they test? Machine or sight?

Get some stop smoke additive in there and get shot of it, this is just the start of your problems. You've well and truly found out why it was for sale.

It is a sight test.

Nulon Smoke Stop worked a treat on my smokey Legnum. That stuff is good.

gdi need intake and crank case brether service just like diesel egr gets coaked on any direct injector . correct oils and high octane 95 minimum fuel and good fuel and air cleaner is a must for gdi gasoline direct injection.
thats for the engine

oil additive for lifter is only promar.mL8 i think its is called , rislone make a product for lifter and smoke that works but its not the thick stuff the thick crap = smoke stop you should never use thats how you destroy the engine and being a gdi it needs high tech engine oil not redstamp warhouse stuff.
