Is it necessary to avoid?

Would a plank cause any damage to a car if it just go over it at 80kph?

Nope, I ran out of water on my farm a few years ago, so ran a 1 inch pipe across the road to the neighbours for water. Put it across the road with a piece of 4X1 either side to stop it being squashed, few road cones up the road to warn people and never had any issues for the whole week I had it there.
Even had the ferrari club drive over it without complaint and hundreds of motorbikes.

Depending on the plank it is possible for it to flick up as you go over it, punch through the floorpan and cut the driver in half on its way through the roof.

Or it could cause a broken tie rod and throw the car off the road.

Or your car could throw the plank through the windscreen of the car behind you and take the drivers head off.

Or it could go straight over without an issue.

Do ya feel lucky?

THAT ^ ^ ^

Not uncommon.
Shouldn't happen when coasting over the planks.
Can happen when braking or accelerating

In this case it was the avoiding vehicles that caused the crashes, NOT an act of hitting the plank.

hit a small piece of 4x2 on the way back from dargaville, avoided the first bit but and in turn lined right up for the second bit, BANG!

Smashed into something and made a hell of a noise but appeared to be no damage

betcha anything it wasn't a "plank" becha it was dunnage off a timber truck.

Hit worse than that on Christchurch's roads every day
.

Nowhere in the article says the size of the plank though. Could have been anything.

All it says is the length.

Ran over a trailer tail-gate, (6x1, 1.2mlong), also on a bridge(!) end flicked up, ruptured fuel tank, tore exhaust off, effing lucky not to be fried alive.

Had a mate years ago who clipped a piece of wood on motorway in early hours of the morning, on his motorbike. The wood flicked up and through his visor killing him.
