fine money goes into general kitty. police budget is set and doesn't change due to fines issued over the year. it would be cheaper for them NOT to enforce speed limits.
enforcing speed limits is an easy cheap way to police the roads. all the paper work and courts is all standardize, so very few actually go to court. a lot of the other traffic crimes requires days in court and that ties up the police and courts.

A partially commission based pay scheme for coppers based on the value of stolen items they recover might not be a bad idea actually.

If everyone that was ticketed for speeding challenged it in court the govt would simply either create a new tax, or increase an existing one to cover the shortfall. Right now the Police can steal from us & pretend that they care about the road toll, so for them it is very much a win-win situation.

That would make sense and things that make sense never will be done , as you should have figured out by now .

LOL speeding tickets are a voluntary tax. don't speed you don't get taxed.

And as less and less people speed they have to keep moving the goal posts so as to preserve their revenue stream. The "they" I refer to is the system in general.

Now that, is a great idea, but, most people now budget for traffic fines, like all their other taxes,so don`t really mind paying a few.

What the Police will never tell you is that as road building technology & car making technology improves driving at higher speeds becomes both safer & more natural. Yet speed limits have not increased to match this. The government has lowered the overall level of driving skill on our roads through the processes of flooding the country with immigrants & tourists with low levels of driving skills, & by allowing our modern youth access to high powered cars & pathetic punishments when they are caught breaking road rules.
These factors, in combination keep the road toll much higher than it should be (even allowing for the drop in fatalities through vicious enforcement). The police know that if speed limits were raised their revenue would drop & people would question why they stole so much for so long.
It is easier to steal from someone if they do not know that they are being robbed, than if they are aware of it.

The police do not set the speed limits, their job is just to enforce the limits set by others.
How can higher speeds be 'more natural'? Walking speed is closer to 'natural', perhaps a short burst of running from time to time in an emergency.
Lowered skill? Yet the driving test is more vigorous than it ever has been.
The Police have no interest in collecting fines - they don't get to keep any of it. It all goes into the Consolidated fund via the Min of Justice.
Stealing by stealth - so if you get pinged for a traffic offence, this is theft ?

re 11 so why are tickets again on fair go this wedensday because they are theiving gungsters the lot of em.
The police can show discretion, but if a person who is marginally over the speed limit receives a warning the cop is not using his (or her) to make money for the govt.
Walking is natural, but driving a car requires a degree of mechanization (the car) that allows the driver to increase speed with no extra physical effort. As technology in cars improves, the potential for higher speeds does also.
Although the driving tests are stricter, modern youth will drive sensibly to impress to instructor for the purpose of passing the test. Then drive like an idiot to impress (A) Themselves, (B) Their friends, & (C) Cute girlies.
The strictness of the driving tests are totally irrelevant to the imports, as they often (as do our modern youth) drive without a license, or with an overseas license that may or may not be relevant to our driving conditions.
I am not talking about where the money goes, the Police do have an interest in writing tickets. It is called a quota. The Police are not comfortable with this description (Too accurate) so they call it a "Performance Indicator" or some such thing. This fools a lot of people into thinking that the Police are focused on road safety.
A lot of motorists will drive at slightly over the speed limit, in complete safety, yet they are easy prey for the cops. I have lost count of the number of times that I have followed a cop, in a marked patrol vehicle drive from St Lukes Into town on SH 16 at 100 km/h, even though the posted speed limit is 80 km/h.

nice to see another voice of reason on this MB that can see through the PR bullshit that the police push, they cant even keep to their own rules, parking speed camera vans behind bushes etc etc, i have no respect for the police at all anymore ever since they started shifting the goal posts in the name of revenue, that idiot carey griffiths has been arsed out so that is a good thing i guess.
