LSD

Bit of grinding coming from the diff. 09 FG ute 160,00k's. Only feel it going slow straight and cornering.

Would it be worth an oil change before getting it pulled down. or can these be adjusted?

Is there any difference from this diff to the likes of an xa or xf lsd?

No idea if these are the same as the old clutch based 9" LSD's?
If they are, I had one that had picked up a bit of a chatter (not grinding though). More noticeable cornering slowly. Drained all of the oil out, replaced with good quality proper LSD Oil, and it was all good from then on.

Had a similar experience with a 70's Chrysler diff. I know nothing of a more modern one tho. Prob a good place to start with an oil change

Breakdown of the oil additives is certainly a problem, if the oil hasn't been changed before it definitely should be changed. I remember diffs in BA XR's getting very 'grabby' long before 100k was reached on the odo. They used to have a very smelly and expensive additive for the oil that Ford insisted you use but I don't think its needed on the later ones, Castrol IIRC reformulated their oil to reduce the shudder and eliminate the need for the additive.

Just changed mine with Nulon

Sure it's a LSD? ,Standard BA/BF/FG's were open wheelers with Turbo/V8 came with LSD

# 4 nice info cheers

# 5 I would be very very surprised if the ute was not an lsd. Just like my BA V8 it has a traction control you can turn off. I found standard sedans don't have this option

v8_mopar, Sep 28, 3:43pm
Looked it up in the manual and is an lsd. How is the new oil going and why did you change from the recommended by ford oil?

carclan, Sep 28, 3:49pm
Better to use the genuine oil, I think 90,000 is the recommended interval to change it.

With a title like that we need to be talking about dragons and how vivid that rubbish bin is. Not bloody diffs and oil

ntalke, Sep 28, 4:31pm
The original Rear Axle fluid was Castrol SAF-XA but other Fluid can be used that or supersedes the original

Done over 100,000km's and it's the 3rd time I have changed, also change engine oil under 10,000km's with fully synthetic

Seems like there is differing opinions on how long to leave changing the LSD fluid, some change at 20,000km's

v8_mopar, Sep 28, 5:24pm
And then there's me with its never been done whoops. I've changed engine oil every 10,000 and auto at 90,000 just never thought to do the diff.

On Ford XR6 Turbo.com(only see if a member),someone with a FG turbo ute with your symptoms

I have a 08 Turbo ute with 40k on it,,,, in the last 12mths it had been making a hell of a racket in the diff,,taken to ford as usual cant find or hear any thing. Syptoms clungs and shuddering when at round abouts and only when car is doing around 5kph and when towing my PWC,,,My brother has a 2010 ute with 20k on it and it was stating to make some noises aswell. As he is in the motor industry spoke to a Penrite rep and he mentioned that the Oil ford use is crap,,,spent $57 on some synthedic oil (excuse the spelling) and I can not believe how quiet it is now. And even after having a lap at the local Street meet yesterday.

Save a sample of fluid when you change it for analyst if needed

It was pretty common knowledge that an oil swap followed by going to a open area like an empty car park where you could do some tight circles and figure 8's going forwards and backwards, ie really get the diff internals working hard would shut them up.

v8_mopar, Sep 30, 6:56pm
Changed the oil plus put in the recommended additive then got the diff working to it's extremes. Has been quiet since but only does a few km's since. Hoping it will stay this way.

Thanks for all info and input
