Our Pug's clutch isn't like that. You really should've had it checked out if you were unsure - it was obviously on its last legs.

I have owned 3 manual pugs incl a 306 and the clutch operation has been like any normal clutch on any normal car.

You found out why it was for sale. You always get an expert opinion on matters like this as part of an independent PPI, especially on old European cars, owners will tell you anything in order to dodge their looming bills.

2000 isn't "old", 1886 is old (for cars).

Wrong, ask the manufacturer if they think its old. Programmed life of a modern Euro (or anything else for that matter nowadays) is 10 years.

Like asking a teenager if you're old.

Aside from the previous owner having you on. I am curious on a couple of things.
When you say the clutch is "gone" what exactly is the symptom and has it been diagnosed by a reputable mechanic?
The reason I am asking is that from memory most of those have a cable clutch. If the cable has broken, you won't be able to get it in to gear, it will just graunch.
If it's slipping, it may only need some adjustment.
If the clutch really is "gone" as in worn out. I would have expected you might have noticed at test drive time given you haven't had it long.
A wrongly adjusted or freying cable can feel odd, much as you have described.
Lastly, a Clutch on a 306 shouldn't be overly expensive as far as clutches go, those sorts of parts are very reasonable from the right sources for 306's and it should be one of the quicker clutches around to change. Nice and straight forward under the bonnet with those. Shop around for prices and perhaps come back for some idea as to whether you being quoted fairly.
Best of luck with it.

After some googling, I think your problem is indeed the clutch cable which is known to give problems on RHD models because of the route it has to take from the right hand drivers position.
The good news is that it is likely to be less expensive than a repair of the friction parts of the clutch. Now, if Jazz could just let us know where those 'right sources' are, all will be well, or as well as can be expected.

Just doing a Clutch job on a Citroen Saxo 1.4i sister car to the Peugeot 306 1.4 (1360cc) . Clutch plate $ 58.00 . Pressure plate $64.00. Also doing brakes. Front Pads $29.00. Yes so parts are astronomical prices. NOT!

Correct information-via google and not jazz aye?
(The position of the plastic auto adjusting section usually ends up having a meltdown from the exhaust)

mayhem--can you define "just went"? Is it a case of the clutch is now not working as in you get zero drive and lots of RPM or is it a case of you are always driving and you can't change gears? One option says worn out clutch plate the other option points to broken cable.
