They won an American design award for the engine bay whereby the engine could separate in a head on crash and release safely without crushing the cabin! (It would travel under the car and out the back) I went to several crashes involving head-ons and. yes the engine was sitting quite a way back down the road with a relatively integral cabin. No crushed legs!

There are still people who think having a big lump of iron in front of you is protection though.

I,ve had a coupla of these brilliant little rockets, one was a 3dr stationwgn, 1400,5 spd datsun powered, used to race the wrightsons rep(2 litre Telstar) from Lake Hawera to Mataura threw the back roads, he knew when I had him, same corner, the wee shoveit, like shit to a blanket really. The other was a wee 3 door hatch I put a 2.3 v6 in it and the ford shifter fitted the factory hole, alas the diff decided it was not liking the pure power the ford put out and shit itself going up George st in Dunna,s one night, gotta drive one to love e,m even in the big block 1256cc mod they are the bestest in the gravel(not many gravel road,s around anymore. bugga),piss all over a escort for handling but not power. My reminissing is over. but there was one mate who shoved a rover v8 into one and that was and is another story.

Its not the actual fitting of the 2300cc CF Bedford thats the issue - its finding a Radiator that will fit in in the space left . -and of course the headstand welding making up the headers.

We had 3 hatchbacks as driving school cars, back in the 80s/early 90s. They were superb for the job.

I had one as my second car - lame performance, but a fun handling car. even won a car club Autocross in it. I used [cut] victor springs for stiffer handling.
