Fair call, I'm hypothesising and I know you know your stuff.
My current daily tank 2002 Volvo is band 4 so I'm happy!

Many years ago my aunt had a DAF, who first used the cvt in a car I believe, and I strongly remember how crap it was, lots of revs and bugger all movement. But small autos were rare then and it was arguably better than an auto mini or some such. Recently used a new outback 6 cylinder and still didn't like it but I see why many do as it is incredibly smooth and easy.
Each to own.

They are very smooth to drive because thats what they are designed to do, but the nature of that design leads to poor reliability.
I believe its the belts that give the trouble.

The newer CVTs are very durable. Brands like Subaru are putting a lot of power through them now, and using them in serious performance cars and they seem to hold up fine.
I hope that manufacturers start hooking CVTs up to diesel engines in cars, as diesels perform most economically when they are kept at constant revs and allowed to use their torque whichna CVT would allow.

It is the oil pressure that CVTs run at that is making them so efficient. 11,000psi as against 2,500psi in a normal auto. Hence oil quality and servicing requirements can not be ignored as in the past.

You WILL get the sound like you get when the clutch is slipping in a manual when you plant your boot.Gentle acceleration should be quiet and seamless . Anything else and I would be insisting on a clean bill of health from a transmission specialist.

Thanks Kaz but not that kinda sound. A hard sound to describe but it seemed to be engine rather than trans. Noise disappears as soon as foot comes off throttle.
Wont be purchasing until it sounds sweet but the dealer hasnt actually listed it here yet because of the noise and it wont be listed until fixed.

I'd be wanting to Know EXACTLY whats being done.

It's all about injuries sustained in crashes - stuff like the number and severity of those crashes is (in theory) controlled for.

That isn't to say the researchers got it right, indeed in many cases cars have ended up in the wrong bracket (especially imports which are common here but rare in Australia where most of the data came from)
