rwd, easy to work on, easy to modify without worrying about messing up all the electrickery on newer stuff.
also a desire to be seen as cool, edgy and niche - they think this image will land them some skirt.

Maxi? Maxi! Word must have got out that you could sleep in the back of one, someone probably saw a Leyland ad on YouNoob and decided it was for them. Frightening.

And they'd be right.
THINKING crumpet likes getting into a car that's obviously not going to be going 200km/h in the next few minutes.

I don't think they would be after *thinking* crumpet.

They still call it crumpet? Cool old school term.
extrayda,
May 13, 5:51pm
Crumpet or even Strumpet ! Not a term I would usually use, but I like it :-)
vivac,
May 13, 5:54pm
If crumpet could think to that point, said crumpet would probably not get into an older car that has no crumple zones, airbags, ABS etc

#3 Has senility kicked in here? Since when were Maxis and 1300's RWD?
Ease of servicing; no electronics/computers; not too much plastic that degrades all too quickly either. Precisely why many of us still have an affinity for older cars.
The other indefinable is character. Take the badges off any modern car, particularly the Jappa's, and what have you got? Something with no real character?

Actually, older Japanese cars are seen as just as cool- if not more so- but a lot now tend to have already priced themselves up a notch and out of reach of the "cheap fun" factor.
Survival of more British "classics" has more to do with their relative value as a transport car well into the late Eighties, nothing to do with "collectability" but plenty to do with a lack of anything else much that was affordable to drive at the cheap end, therefore the older stuff stayed on the road.
Most Japanese cars came later on the scene, when the huge shift away from car-for-life to finite-life-span saw cars crushed at the 17-18 year mark (as an average) rather than, as in the past, keep putting Band-Aids on them (as the British stuff had done) until such time as they actually really were classics.
Japanese stuff was considered "classic" just a little too late in the NZ fleet life cycle, by then economics had removed most from the roads. Today, a tidy Crown, 260C, R30 Skyline, Datsun 180B, 120Y, KE30 Corolla, Cressida, Galant GL, GTO, Lancer EX, Luce, 626, 323, etc etc etc, is worth quite a bit of coin.
And don't even think of starting in on the value and collectability of stuff like RX3's, RX2's, "Mustang" Celicas, 240Z's, DR30 Skyline RS Turbo etc.

Most modern cars.
Remove the badges / paint & upholstery & you have a "world" car. How many GM fan boys realise that their Holdens are basic Korean Daewoo bodys & soon to be Opel based.
We have 1 of those lads here who loved his Mazda Familia but HATES 99% of Fords. Talking to him about the new Ford Ecotech engines promptly ends up in a HuffnPuff slanging match.

Most of us old buggers wouldnt go back to the Pommy stuff apart from on a fine day,.I personally prefer more modern jappo,s More economical, reliable, dont leak oil outside and water inside and dont stop in the rain I had about every car made by BMC but know mechanics who break into a cold sweat just thinking of them.

Understand perfectly. What could be nicer than a KE70 Corolla, powered by a 200 bhp 4AGE?
sw20,
May 13, 7:57pm
A KE70 powered by a 118hp 4AGE. Wringing 200hp out of one would render it undriveable on the street.

Funny that. I have owned BMC/Leyland/MG/Rover/Landrover- exclusively and continuously since 1967 and apart from those bought 15th hand or thereabouts, doing all of my own maintenance up until more modern times, I really haven't had many problems at all.
At least trained mechanics who looked after them didn't seem to fear them and most were relatively easy to maintain, even for untrained amateurs like me.
If nothing else, it taught you the basics, without the need for many service tools, which is why some of the youngsters today go for them, not to mention the fact that by nature, being somewhat unsophisticated, they are in fact very tuneable, quite cheaply. The Mini/A Series engine is the classic example of that.
Working on a Mini, there is virtually no part that will not respond to modification, improvement or replacement to personalise it.
Most newer stuff is built to finer tolerances and is far more efficient, so it isn't as easy or cheap to improve.

The two most over-rated old classic fashion accessories I can think of.
