Prices: NZ vs Australia

Our dollar is approaching parity with the Aussie$. Why is there such a disparity in the prices of new cars between us? Extra taxes or what?

Market size likely

this has been done to death here before but when all the math is done there is no real difference

grangies, Feb 16, 6:17pm
Can you give us an example?

I would guess a combination of several reasons:
1) Local manufacturing market - no import/shipping costs for those vehicles.
2) Much much larger market - economies of scale.
3) Closer to the common SEA manufacturing areas than NZ - less shipping cost.

. and that's before I look at the linked thread.

GST is only 10% in Aussie I'm told.

New Isuzu Mu-X. $50,000 in Aussie. $79,000 here

Specifically Mazda.

The new prices have been released in Oz for the CX3 in the $20 - $30K range. In NZ, $30 - $40K

http://www.toyota.co.nz/our-range/camry/ only 12k difference in nz and you get low interest saving several thousand, then add extra gst + exchange rate difference you might find the NZ example cheaper than OZ. Those OZ examples given are 2014 not brand new as well.

Ok - here are the Australian starting prices for Hyundai March 2015 brand new with full warrantys etc etc
i20 A$12990 plus $1k eftpos card; Accent A$15990 plus $1k eftcard; i30 A$21490 plus$500eftcard; ix35 A$25990 plus $1k eftcard; Elantra A$19990 plus $2k eftcard;

Big difference!

New Zealand new cars are usually higher spec than Aussie ones. NZ has more used imports and the Kiwis who might buy stripped down base model new cars if they were in Oz, buy used imports instead.
