Friend looking at a X5 UK import. Was told by the dealer the whole odo cluster has to be replaced because main speedo display is MPH and has to be converted to KPH. Is this a new compliance requirement.

It is not a compliance requirement--Its something that gets done for convenience. keep in mind ODO will also click over in miles. Personally I'd just buy the sticker set and mark it up in k's

Obviously they are not switchable like the late model Corvettes then? (Which are digital, even though an analogue type display)

If a UK import I think there will be a way to convert it over quite easily. What makes me say that? I had a HB Viva and was stripping out the dash for some reason and found inside 2 speedo faces, the miles face and a KPH face hidden behind it. Easy thing to just swap them around. When I mentioned this to a friend he said it's because Britain had been saying they would convert over to KPH soon, and it was a way for the manufacturers to hedge their bets and save money. This was ages ago but can't see why things should have changed.
Regarding the odometer, can't see it being an issue there, as surely the law only asks that you know what speed you are traveling at.
Sounds like bloke in the pub advice to me

Well with so many muppets still saying that thier car gets xx mpg even though car has km speedo and we buy petrol per liter. im sure the x5 will suit someone
