Had some firewood tree rings i use to use in conjunction with axle stands--just to sure to be sure! . Cut them up for firewood this season, now i'm worried. Back in my EIP Vauxhall days i could get the gearbox out in no time with the car on hay bales. Not sure i'd use that method now days lol.

I've always been a fan of 3 legged axle stands as the 3 contact points make them very stable even if used on rough ground.

Some years back I took the dimensions of your standard 3 leg axle stand (similar to these, http://www.swsni.com/workshop-supplies-online-swsni-com-c1/axle-stands-c72 ). I doubled the dimensions and fabricated 4 of them from heavy wall tube and angle. Each stand has two inserts, one conventional and the other with horizontal pins that plug into the sills of the race car.

Still got them and still trust them for myself, and most importantly my volunteer service crew over any commercially available product. There's no 2nd chance when you're under a car!

They're big and stable enough to have other attachments as well; I've made two rollers that plug into them for holding lengths of stock I'm cutting in the band saw, I've got a lamp holder that used one as a base for working on the car at night in Parc ferme and the list goes on.

Breaking strain is breaking strain, doesn't matter if you get there by static pull or shock loading. That's why everything that lifts has a safety factor. Chains/shackles are 4:1, wire slings are 5:1, synthetic slings are 6:1. Steep angles and sharp corners increase loading on everything, there's been many a shackle bent out of recognition like that, and 4 point lifts will in most cases only lift on 2 points, unless a load sharing device is used.

I don't know much about breaking strain, but I know a lot about being blasé and thinking it'll never happen to me.A lot of workshop accidents are caused by complacency, mine included.John Kirwan said "one day you're cock of the walk. the next you're the feather duster ".

I use axle stands with blocks of solid timber and rims under the car to be safe.
And good axle stands too, after I was alerted to a recall by Repco on their website for some of their axle stands being sold due to a weak holding pin or something.
You only got one life so best to be safe!
