Miles and Kilometres

oldboyjohn, Aug 14, 1:31pm
I have bought and sold a few older cars and American cars.
I have repeatedly suggested to TM that they give a miles/km choice.
You never know if the seller has converted the miles to km's for the listing, or left it at miles. Or in the case of some later American cars, eg Mustangs, they are in miles if they come from America and Km's if they come from Japan, but again, only the km option for the seller.
How hard can it be to have a tick box like the other specifications.
How hard can it be!
Your thoughts.

Nope I don't agree. You waaay underestimate the stupidity of the public
KISS then little chance of errot

purple666, Aug 14, 1:46pm
Yup because if there are 2 boxes to pick from at least 1 in 3 will tick the wrong box. Most auctions I have seen with a mph speedo mention what the mileage is quoted in in the text.

I would say some, not most

kazbanz, Aug 14, 1:52pm
sorry john honestly you really don't get just how stupid most people are when it comes to that stuff.
Or rephrase it--how stupid they can pretend to be when trying to get out of a deal. --"ohh didn't realise its miles"

Dangerous catering for the lowest. TM should, if they're doing it properly, have a pretty good description of the audience and their abilities. It's simple modelling most web design entails.
Since we get plenty of other choices I'd guess their model allows for users to get that right.
To me it's more the fall from user friendliness of late at TM.

I see what you mean.

Took awhile to pick et up didn't it?

luxy, Aug 14, 2:52pm
They will not listen! I have had them on twice about it. Once they actually withdrew my ad when I specifically said the car was in miles. They just have their heads in the sand

gsimpson, Aug 14, 2:54pm
They just need it to default to km for the twits.

lookoutas, Aug 14, 3:48pm
That would work. But I've had it clearly stated in the blurb that it was miles, not kilometres, and still got asked the question!

With all the good suggestions from members ignored over the years and the continued inflexibility from Trade Me motors, I seriously can't understand how they continue to take the market share from Auto trader.

Then again, it is surprising how many twits advertise cars with a 2 digit year of manufacture.

What dont you understand about an 01 corolla for example?

richardmayes, Aug 15, 10:28am
Any MPH car worth owning will have been around the clock at least twice. Reading on the clock becomes meaningless, what is the CONDITION like?

socram, Aug 15, 10:32am
If I was buying, and I thought it might be in miles, then it is my responsibility to ask.

If I was selling, if it was in miles, then I'd say so, as the default for NZ is kms.

bill-robinson, Aug 15, 10:43am
may be but a KPH car will have been around the clock 3 times so it is even worse

daryl14, Aug 15, 2:55pm
I dont understand why you want your 01 corolla to come first on the list in my classic car search, for example. In what universe does that help anyone sell or buy the car?

tgray, Oct 7, 7:27pm
If in doubt, you can always simply ask the seller.
No doubt you would be asking him questions anyway if you were considering bidding on it.
