direct was always 1:1, had to be, the input shaft was locked to the output shaft they could not have a ratio differential even in automatics, there will be one gear that is direct, a clutch pack locks the input to the output and most of the other bits are idling under no drive apart from oil drag, their clutches are disengaged, when shifting into an overdrive ratio a clutch drives a sun planet arrangement to give the o/drive ratio as the shafts uncouple

Top gear in a 4 speed car gearbox is usually 1;1 as the input shaft is directly connected to the main shaft by the syncro in a 5 speed box, drive comes in input shaft down to counter shaft then the driving gear on countershaft will have more teeth than the gear on mainshaft gearing it up in ratio.

did you know that most 200hp + trucks run an underdrive box, a standard drive box, and an overdrive box, 5 in each, the diff ratios are often 9:1 or bigger, but they still make 100km hr through those boxes with engine revs of approx 2200, sometimes less, the low/ medium/ high is a set of cogs on the input shaft, the gearbox actual only has 5 gears in it, some still use 13:1 /8:1 diffs as well ( like the old eatons - 11:1/ 9:1))

Thanks - thats it! My dad had a 56 Chev for a work car. think the reflector part used to swing out of the way.
thats either a 55 or a 56, hawk, and yes the filler is behind the right rear tailights, they swivel to the inside to uncover the filler neck
they also have a clever crossflow head from a single in block cam, the exhaust pushrods sloped across through the head to a second set of rockers on the other side of the motor, no overhead multiple cams in those days

The Humber Hawk Mk 1V in the link was produced from late 1964-early 1967.

The one I had in mind must have been a Series 1, from the years it was built. The owners also had a Commer bus with the mighty TS3 engine :)

Question - Where did you get that commodore ? Answer - Off a Commer van.
A local bus service/ mail delivery outfit bought a brand new one of these Dodge minibuses back in the late 1970's.( same as our workshop Commer van, but had swept up trim and grill treatment and different dash.) I worked on that particular one regularly as it traveled large distances weekly and was comparatively reliable too I recall. I recall it was at around 350,000km when the business was sold to a new owner. Was a 1725cc one as well (cast iron head version) normal 4 speed -no O/D though it was an option, I've seen automatic ones though among the ones sold new down south way?

how did you manage t forget that vital piece of info, the commer van has a 5:1 diff, what you need is a 3.7 or 3.9 diff for it, do some measuring, you may find a falcon diff will fit under the back, or earlier ( Mk2 zephur's had a 2.7:1 diff in their auto models), even a hunter diff was a 4.1? - been years since I was under a commer van so have no idea what width it is between backing plates or between spring pads - your 5sp box will have a low enough 1st for anything you will use it for, and will a tall diff you get the advantage of the taller top gear they came out with 15 inch rims? 4 or 5 stud?

Bit of a roughy but good parts to be had there for sure, including an O/D gearbox. O.P. would have all the bits available to do a straight swap right there.

the later model space vans were 4:11 which is a slight improvement but not enough need something a bit better, it has aftermarket 13" wire wheels which obviously make her scream top end

It is DOHC, but a lovely 8 valve.
And I'll bet any amount of money it's not a head gasket. It will have a corrosion hole behind one of the valves. Repaired my one years ago, almost need to cut head in half to get to the hole lol.

Mitsubishi Sigma 5 speed box? My first car was a '69 Hunter. 1725 and 4 speed. Also had an '82 Sigma wagon, 2.0 and 5 speed. Mate the two together, should be sweet, and cheap!
