Anyone have authoritive info on which types of autos were used when on mini coopers? Not S model, just plain cooper. I think all early ones were cvt and later went to conventional auto? Wiki is confused, even forums give different info. Might be a car for me in future but it'll be early one and don't want cvt. Sellers ofeten don't know and being in Nelson I can't just drive it! Is there a clear guide or did they mix them up?

Early (classic) mini autos used the AP auto. Don't think there were any classic Mini Coopers (S or not) that were auto.

Sorry I do mean the modern bmw made mini! Mind you I had an auto mini moke once! Someone had put a 1300s box and engine in,mif was fantastic at grass gymkhana as I could change gear direction whilst still moving!

The early BMW Mini (BMWM) Cooper models use the GACVT16Z CVT transmission. Get the sellers to count the number of pedals or photograph the interior. hopefully they can count to three.
http://tinyurl.com/kn5xxsa The Haynes manual on the BMWM Cooper. Youtube vids will cover cvt problems. A duck clutch with a manual might be an alternative. Most of the mini moke (front wheel drive)gymkhana videos look amateur compared to the moke drivers of long ago. so a v8 smoke moke vid will have to do. https://youtu.be/ahMT3UvoOns

Thanks serf, any fix on when they went to a 'proper' auto and how to tell? Moke? Hmmm. Sorry but can think of much better things to do with a moke than that. Each to own!
Thanks serf, if I get closer I might have to get the book! Certainly don't want the cvt but want auto. Maybe bad idea.m
