Morning smoke on first startup

ambo11, Apr 28, 6:57am
A while ago I bought a Nissan Vanette 4WD manual with the F8 petrol engine in it, 160,000Km. Oil was black, so changed it and used Havoline 10-W40. Have noticed lately it smokes blue at first start up for 5 seconds or so.
Changed to 20-W50 oil with no difference. Whats the cause? Guessing valve guides. if so not too worried as its not using a drop of oil. and also do any of you know any smoke stop products that actually work? Cheers

Throw a bottle of moreys into it

msigg, Apr 28, 8:28am
Just use it, the start up smoke is a little bit of oil leaking down, extra lubrication, will last another 10 years.

You could try an oil reconditioned that softens the rubber and allowed it to seal again.as the rubber seals on the oil guides get a tad hot and harden.
It really does work.
Same sort of thing as power steer stop leak.

stop leek disolves all your paper gaskets. if it has any it will be pouring out oil thru there after 2 weeks having you strip down whole engine housings to replace paper gaskets, far more work then actuarly replacing hard rubber gaskets.
So my advise is dont put any form of crap in to your oil

mrfxit, Apr 28, 10:48am
Normally you have some very good advice BUT, this lot is utter rubbish.

mrfxit, Apr 28, 10:50am
They CAN work in a lot of cases as a temporary measure.
It's around a 50/50 chance of working or not but if it works, it is ONLY a temporary solution to the problem.
It totally depends on the exact condition of the engine & seals before you use any additives

Ambo is probably right when he says it is most likely oil getting down past the valve guides. As msigg says I wouldn't worry about it - at least the vital parts are getting lubricated! And as it doesn't burn oil in service don't bother with any additives, just use it!

huh no infact it has happened to my first car when i used a product like this.
in swizerland no1 drop of oil must leek from a engine during wof time back then.
So i added a stop leek thing and it worked i got my wof and then it started leaking like hell about 2 to 3 weeks after , the oil was now pouring from all the places whom had paper gaskets. So i ended up stipping half the engine to fit new paper and cork gaskets . Not rubbish at all true facts and the last time i ever added any form of crap to magically seal things .

mainlander05, Apr 30, 2:52pm
With an older engine that uses paper and cork,ie pre dinasours,it will always leak no matter what.newer cars don't use paper and cork and so the rubber will be softened not destroyed.we are talking a car engine here not a flaming super car .

Just change the stem seals, you don't even need to take the head off if you know what your doing.

Hi all, a quick update. I tried changing the oil again with 20W-50, no luck. so used Moreys oil conditioner. My God. The thing smoked much worse and much longer with that in, so drained it back out and put straight 20W-50 back in. Still smoked, but better.
Was wondering if it was worth fixing or not (cam belt etc etc due in 5000km) or should I sell it as it is.
Anyway have been putting in the Gulf Western 20W-50 as it an old 1996 van. Supercheap had Helix on sale last weekend, so I thought one last try, so I changed oil to Helix and went for a 100km drive. Hasn't even hinted at smoking cold since then, and have started it dead cold every day since. So I'm left wondering is it a poor quality oil the cause? I'm rapt, will still get the seals done at cambelt time, but I'm impressed it hasn't smoked since Helix was put in, 15W-40. My dad always swore by Helix, maybe the "cheap" oils really only are for lawnmowers.

It may not be helping it using the GW oil, I've not used it personally and can't comment on how good or bad it is, but the Helix is definitely good. I would be very interested in what the oil consumption now drops to after doing 1000km.

ambo11, Jul 19, 3:18pm
Yep I normally use the expensive oils, but used GW as the F8 engine is a very basic engine and older design. but I'm impressed with the Helix. Happy to spend more on a better oil usually and this has reinforced that.

GTX 20/50 also is a good stop smoking oil (o:

Please don't talk about intrade like this. he is a god round here.

intrade, Jul 19, 4:44pm
um yea i think i was right all over , i dont need to be right but if you claim i am wrong or talk rubbish please make it clear with why and how it is wrong as i need to know new things also and yes possibly new cars dont use paper gaskets . my car was a 2.0 diesel reckord opel and i did not write anything wrong, it just might not apply to a modern car.
but modern cars do throw extreem wooblys if the oils is not 100% what the manufacturer states .
also loads of cars did use 1.0 liter oil per 1000km from the early 1990s to 2000+ like fiat tempra and some audi. and in the 60s and 70s alfaromeo had the nicknames oil sardines they used and lost so much oil like a alfa GTV for example.

Ambo--are you certain its BLUE smoke? Im niot being funny matey but this time of year I don't know of ANY car that wont "smoke" for a few seconds (or more) on startup

ambo11, Jul 19, 8:10pm
Hiya Kaz, yep blue, and stank, certainly oil smoke. Has stopped though so I'm stumped apart from saying the Helix oil is that much better than the cheap GW oil from S/Cheap.

Check the oil grades on the different oils at Supercheap. Bought 10L of API CJ-4 oil (STP Semi synthetic Diesel engine oil) that was cheaper than the CH grade.

Here is a list of the grades. http://www.api.org/~/media/files/certification/engine-oil-diesel/publications/mom_guide_english_2013.pdf

CH Diesel oils are for 98 onwards engines. CI for 02 onwards. And CJ diesel oils are for 2010 onwards.

In my case it is for a 02 Merc Vito. So want to use a good oil in it. I almost ended up buying a CH oil. Thankfully it doesn't have a DPF or EGR. (were never fitted from the factory as it is a NZ new Vito). The ali surfaces in the area where the oil filter cartridges go. (always in contact with the oil) are still really shiny and look brand new despite that engine having done over 280K.

intrade, Jul 20, 7:43am
so lets analyse that a bit further what morreys did you put exactly in the engine oil?

lookoutas, Jul 20, 9:57am
Used to work with a guy who did that. Coughed and farted as well.

mainlander05, Jan 21, 12:36pm
Only the modern vvt engines need exactly what manufacturer states.this is a 96 engine.15/40 should be all it needs.don't panic and happy driving.
