Interesting to see

I was recently in a country where most cars are of the European persuasion. Something I noticed was that a vast number of them had very bad clear coat peel/bubble on the upper surfaces particularly the darker colours.
Not disparaging euros but its interesting to note that it doesn't seem to be a Jap/euro thing this clearcoat peeling thing but perhaps a change in paint technology in the late 19890's early 2000's

The sun over here in Qld isnt fussy about the origin of clearcoat. Jap, aussie or euro, it strips the lot off. after a decade or so.

The Germans went to water based paints before anybody else, and the rest of Europe wasnt far behind, it could be a reason. Remember when cars had a laquer finish without a clearcoat, you could buff it right up.

Water based automotive paint is only the satin basecoat colour. All the undercoats and clear coats are solvent borne. It is nothing but a marketing gimmick.

OK yes. The colour of the car may be water based, but the rest is solvent. The manufacturers don't bother to add that piece of information into the equation.
