(2Terrano tie rod - which way to turn locking nut

mals69, Mar 11, 3:05pm
1992 Terrano, Looked on youtube, a guy said they left hand thread. Trying to loosen it but tight does not want to budge either way.
Going by the photo link below when I put the spanner on the nut
should I be applying pressure upwards or downwards ?

Cheers

You should be able to pick it easily from examining the exposed threads. Looking at the photo it appears to be a conventional right hand thread. i.e. the nut needs to be rotated anticlockwise to undo it. (Put an open end spanner on it and push up).

Cheers yeah that is what I thought, like it been done up by samson before he lost his hair. Guess be easier over a pit with a cracking bar for leverage and blow torch to apply bit of heat, poured boiling water over lololl but no difference. Whacked spanner with a hammer but no movement, prob original from factory.

Looks right hand thread to me too.

Thanks skull
More shots below, was it a terrano you were working on gm ? That is one
cannie idea using weight of the vehicle - cheers
The guy on youtube was working on the left handside - will it be left hand thread on leftside - so will be forcing spanner down towards the ground ?

From above

End of the day tie rod ends are actually a damn meknik's night mare.
Tighter than a nun's and let go in. nuckles. owch.

LOL, although us old boys only have to look at one and they undo themselves out of pure, unadulterated fear!

mals69, Mar 11, 6:59pm
Lolllool ain't that the truth, then I got to get it out from casting it sits in,
Reversed crown nut on thread and whacked hell out of it with hammer
but did not move, whacked casting too, goes like clockwork in the YouTube
videos - maybe they prepare first by taking it apart before camera rolls not stuck together for 23 years, prob need a separator of sorts.
When took wheel off thought great this won't take long lolollll famous last words .

mals69, Mar 11, 7:02pm
:) can you telepathic that fear to my terrano in quake city ?

bigmacca, Mar 11, 7:16pm
from memory the last one I did like this , I removed the arm with both ball joints then stuck it in the vice and put a bloody great stilson on the old ball joint about an inch from the lock nut and dealt to it. does let go with a pop.

mals69, Mar 11, 8:04pm
Cheers Big another way to attack it :) - yeah pop alright in the videos I have seen

To be honest mate, although obviously taking the piss there is possibly a little more method in my madness than I'm letting on.
4 decades of hanging off tools gives you an unfair advantage (in Snoops case it's more than 4 decades I suspect!).

I would give the area a quick wire brush, a small spray of CRC and try and move the offending nut. If my polite approach was unsuccessful I would hold a heavy club hammer (or anvil) on one flat of the nut while giving the opposing flat a resounding blow (very squarely on the flat) with one of my favourite ball-pen hammers. A good quality long reach open end spanner on the nut and stillson on the ball joint would probably crack it with ease.

yup was 96 pr50 terrano ,plonkers put huge mags in low pro tyres on so ive done right hand inner and rear top diff mounts. as the mags are stressing the bushes am waiting for the front left hand inner now. lol yay fun there a be arch in such tightplace .
left hand side right thread so use weight of truck again

Yep SR experience the best teacher - I'll give it a crack nigel
Mine the D21 GM plenty of room. Makes me laugh low profile
tyres with some people not realising normal tyres are "half your suspension".

Cheers

When you are having a close look around vehicles with really low profile tyres on them which as you say are part of the suspension ,look carefully around the mounting points as a lot have cracking in the welds . Ive seen many Toyotas and Nissans with cracks and some cars the ride is really affected . Late model cars that have them as standard are very solid around the mounting points .

those terranos have 4 tie rod ends, two each side, one left hand thread one right hand.
so if you turn that tube in the center it will adjust toe in and out.
