I had a car up for sale last week. What with the flood of texts asking this? No "can I have a look?" And one guy who said "what's your lowest price given that I haven't seen the vehicle?" Ended up selling to the guy who rang and discussed the vehicle, came and had a look, then made an offer.

The question 'what's your lowest price?' is a common one and often used to see if they can actually afford it, before wasting their time and yours by coming around first without knowing.

Isn't that what the asking price is for?

The asking price is the point where negotiations start. If your asking price is also your lowest cash price it saves wasting a lot of both party's time and energy if you advertise the price as being not negotiable.

But doesn't it shortcut negotiations if I tell them my lowest price right off the bat. Especially when I know they will probably still chase a cheaper price.
What do you say to them? I said they were best to come and look at the vehicle.

All my cars are advertised with "NO OFFER THANKS" in the ad. Makes it easy for both parties. And before people tell me that's not a good idea, I sell over 200 years a year for the last 11 years and it works for me just fine.

I think we're on the same page mate; if someone tries to lowball me without having seen the car I avoid any negotiation until we're face to face.

There's a big difference between being a car dealer and selling a car privately. Most private sellers/buyers expect to haggle a little on the price. There's nothing wrong with a little bargaining; no need to feel offended if someone tries to beat you down a bit on the price, (all's fair in love, war and selling cars!). :)

I have much hate for people who ask for your lowest price, then promptly offer a much lower amount. They get told where to go quite quickly. happens on facebook buy sell and trade pages ALOT.

I have more than once asked a seller to have a think about the lowest price he'd take over a couple of days and let me know, then I'll say thanks for your time or ask for bank details. This saves me insulting them with an offer thats too low & I've ended up with 3 bikes this way.

if I have advertised an asking price and straight away they ask what is my best price I put it back on them and ask what are you offering . then the negotiations can start . or not .

its pretty obvous. i usually work out around 10% off asking price for cars over $4k so a car with $6500 on it id be happy to drive it away for $5750 etc.

I usually say ,"I am asking $xxxx, but I am prepared to accept more"

Everybody is different, some say $6200 ONO - seems obvious they want 6k, my new ute I brought was 30% off RRP.

Depends if "Or nearest offer" is listed after the price or not lol. But yeah, so many jokers that try to low-ball you. I don't blame them for trying, just tell 'em to fornicate with themselves lol
