for a newly registered 'address unverified' account to place bid on a vehicle? I may be paranoid but I dont think my first TM purchase would be over $15,000. Also, is it an easy check for TM to see if it's shill bidding? Do they check IP address? Cheers

You can be as supspicious as you want to. There are a lot of reasons people will create a TM account and bid on a car auction Some are shadey reasons. Shill bidding is the most odvious. Some are dodgy for reasons not directly related to the auction. Traders not wanting the seller to know they are traders. and also not wanting a link from their purchase to the account selling the vehicle. Some are perfectly innocent. Someone decides they want to buy a car and finds they need a TM account to do so. Equally you get people who expect to buy a car for half of sod all and get all sour grapes when a "new bidder" dares to out bid them.

They may have created the account for the specific purpose of being able to buy a car on Trade Me. Just keep your wits about you and "protect yourself at all times"

Too true. I'm willing to bid higher and there may obviously be others also. I guess it is quite common for dealers to buy alot of private vehicles on here

This question was asked by another trader - Im guessing the stuff you have been bidding on has been from the 2000's and the sort of cars you see in all the used car dealerships around NZ. Heres the thing.Dealers know what we pay for cars in japan. We know what freight, reconditioning and compliance costs are and that its a 4-6 week wait before that stock is available. So based on that information dealers will pay up to and a bit over that price to secure stock they can have instantly in NZ. But it would be rare for a dealer to bid to much more than that price. You as a private buyer should therefore easily be able to outbid the dealers and get a cheaper price than you would pay walking into a dealership and paying retail.
But what are you looking for? -what are you bidding to? Im happy to give an indication what a realistic price range you would expect to bid to if I know what the car is.

Have done that for a few people from time to time, especially in the early days before "everyone" was online.

Op, yes TM can and will check ip addresses and can see if an account is coming from same IP address. But wise cons know this so get someone else to do it elsewhere, or they could simply use a false IP address which is easy to do these days apparently. Magic to me though! But if your genuinely suspicious you can ask TM, though simp,y because they're new probably isn't much to go on.

Just bid your top dollar and if you don't win walk away, if it hasn't got to reserve then no one will buy it. At some point in time you would have been a new bidder as well, everyone has to start somewhere.

I'm surprised TradeMe even bothers checking IP adresses, when every school kid knows (in most circumstances) rebooting your router will display a different public IP address.
