Having the same sort of issue. Need better ground clearance than a car and lots of boot space, 4wd while not used weekly, is very much appreciated when needed. Looking at xtrails and subaru foresters. Currently have a grand vitara and after a good run it's becoming uneconomic to fix and the boot space is too small for our dog (especially as we want to get another). The vitaras are a nice small 4WD if that is any help for you. Ours has done about 150,000k with us and has not required anything major until now.
