Does anyone know if this would be a good car to get, it is a 2001

andy61, Apr 17, 1:57pm
Not well regarded, dodgy electronics, some had very short lifespan timing belts(around 60000kms), but not sure if 2001 Vectras used timing belt or chain.Better cars out there.

jan423, Apr 17, 2:09pm
This one has had full head recondition and new timing chain sets done on it.

mrfxit, Apr 17, 2:53pm
Possibly this is a Vectra B model.
I know the 2000 model is a Vectra B
Pile of steaming %$@#$ thats well worn out before the average lifespans of other brands.
All sorts of things failing these days.
Even the wiper systems are crud & falling apart

jan423, Apr 17, 3:17pm
Are you talking about this make of car?

franc123, Apr 17, 3:27pm
Yes he was. Have you not had enough of outgoings with this Mazda trans debacle? Invest in something much better than an old Vectra.

jan423, Apr 17, 3:48pm
All I have is about $1500 to get another car, I am in no position to get a later model car with a higher price.

tamarillo, Apr 17, 4:00pm
Op, don't let these naysayers get you down. You're thinkng is good; because of the rather unique JAPANESE bias of much of our markets buyers some good cars are available for less cash that aren't jappers. These guys might be confused with the variuos Daewoo sourced small holdens but this is a German Opel design and is sold through Europe and in British as a Vauxhall. There's no particular problem with them and some would consider them a European Corolla; dull but smile and reliable.
As I said in a recent post I got a mate in golden bay into one and he trashes his cars with lots of gravel roads and towing. Car is holding up as well as any and gives no problems.
If you've found a good one you can afford go for it. A good Japanese will likey cost more and arguably be no more reliable. When cars get to a certain age and milage it matters bugger all where they're built (with few exceptions granted) and more the condition, it's servicing, it's care, the feel and noise it makes.

franc123, Apr 17, 4:24pm
Crap.

tamarillo, Apr 17, 4:26pm
Ah! An intelligent, well thought out, considered response. Wonderful.

jan423, Apr 17, 4:40pm
Thank you so much, I am feeling down already so your post has cheered me up.

Hi. I live in Putaruru and as the trans has gone on my car (still drivable at moment) I am so frightened travelling a distance in it, in case it completely goes on me. I am in my 60's and honestly don't know anything about cars. All I need is something that is mechanically sound and that will get me up to Auckland every 3 weeks to see my elderly mum. Will have a look at the Mitsubishi in a moment. Thanks so much for your help.

tamarillo, Apr 17, 4:46pm
Pleasure. In which case best keep it simple and not something needling some care like Renault. Mitsi looked good as did Honda if manual okay. Toyotas are damn reliable but come with lots of miles and abuse at this money.
You can find a good car at $1500 but need to be canny. Don't be afraid to look at things asking bit more and offer them what you have. You are polite so know one will take offence. A dealer trade in might work well, if it's not their type and they have made profit on the sale it was traded on they just clear them. And a bit of body paint damage lowers price but not reliability. And it's good for Auckland driving!
Tell us what you find.

jan423, Apr 17, 4:53pm
Thank you I will let you know when I do find something, your advice is much appreciated.

tamarillo, Apr 17, 5:14pm
Is the vectra on trademe?

jan423, Apr 17, 5:35pm
No its not on TM, could you please check out this Auction No for me, I have been talking to the guy about this car and he said the new owner does not need to do anything as car has always been serviced on time.

That Tercel is certainly worth a second look.

jan423, Apr 17, 6:39pm
Yes it is. It also still has 50,000 km's left on the cam belt.

mrfxit, Apr 17, 7:13pm
Crap sarcasm ;-)

mrfxit, Apr 17, 7:20pm
Daughter just brought a 1996 Toyota Corona for $500 with a new wof & good tyres.
Bit untidy on the paint interior & the usual trolley dents plus it wasn't reg'd but runs well.

jan423, Apr 17, 7:38pm
I am buying the car mentioned above with the Auction number I gave, someone in Auckland has had a look at it for me and said it is a great car for a great price, so I am very happy. I will be picking it up in Auckland on Tuesday. By the way I am so happy your daughter has found a good car for herself.

tamarillo, Apr 17, 8:16pm
The tercel? Glad you found something and like it. Go well.

jan423, Apr 17, 8:31pm
Yes the tercel, what do you think about it?

inkapuka, Apr 18, 6:04am
Can't go wrong with a corolla this will last longer than that Vauxhall

mrfxit, Apr 18, 6:46am
Starter price depends totally where you get it from.
We just brought a brand new starter for a 78 Lancer for $80 (12 mth warrenty). from Repco.
Starter for our 96 SR20DE Bluebird cost $180 from TM

OEM or Aftermarket & which supplier for either, makes a huge difference
