Just querying am looking at a suzuki swift (manual) with 176k on it 2008, just wondering with the way cars and technology has moved forward is this to much or not to bad. Just not to sure as havnt updated car for 12 years TIA

Not too sure on the Swifts, but I've kept a Toyota and a Mitzy for over 400k so it should be about 1/2 way though it's life.

Yea that's nothing for the swifts, as most of the cars nowdays, most good models will do 250k with no trouble, some of the more technical cars become worthless at high km because of lots of electrical problems, the main japanese brands are very good, most of the euro brands will do those km as well, just they all have to be serviced properly. Each to their own but would not buy it - its done a lot of work and is average build quality to begin with. Buy a low k Nissan and have decades of trouble free motoring - Not invited hassle .

the more tighter the emission the vehicle meets the more crap will be added and the more it will cost when 1 component fails it starts taking a whole row out like a domino if its not fixed before it faild , ford will destroy all and everything befor they stop going. volvo stop and display check engin light as soon as it thinks its overheated the other side of extreem. its why i like the dacia sandero no almost no crap on there, These become a pile of crap like any other vehicle when you go and buy the fully stuffed with electronic version. A other problem of new cars like that toyota clarkson has crashed in thze nz filming. the wiring is ultra thin on new cars this is to try and save on a few kg for the whole wiring loome. making it a nightmare to repair or even try and do mesurments on such thin wirings , fuesboxes also have shrunk all to save a few gramms , but hey the manufacturer makes cars so they can sell new ones again the lifetime of a vehicle is 6to 10 years by manufacturer standards so after that it should fail and vanish to make room for new sales items.

176k is nothing. Well, it is a few, but really difficult to clock up if you are just going down to the shops. They will be mostly on the open road, so hot running. Where is the car located? If it has been in a small out of the way town then there is your clue. Take it for a drive, if it still feels nice to drive, then it would be a good one. If it feels horrible in anyway (Steering, gearshift, rattles) then stay away. The owner didn't really look after it at all. It may be just wheel alignment / gearbox oil / knackered suspension bushes etc, but it should feel good to you.

With the motor only being one aspect, wear on all other components have to be considered. Ever sat at a set of lights where there is a rise in the road and watched how hard the traffic crossing suspension is working - just one aspect where it does not matter how careful the owner is. If its nothing 176k why do trade in prices slide once a vehicle has reached 100k - over 150k trade in price really plummets - could it be that most do not want them for a reason ?

Trade in prices plummet for high km cars due consumer stupidity . In the 70's when we changed from miles to km it would seem that the old 100,000mls became 100,000km and cars have improved since then . For example when was the last time you heard of a car having a valve grind ? Modern cars last much longer than a 60 or 70's car without any breakdowns really . Just service them regular and they will serve you well. Have owned five Toyotas and two Nissans each with over 230,000km of trouble free motoring . Years ago the family bought as new a Hillman and Mini that had gearbox repair (20,000km )+ valve grind ( 5,000km ) respectively .

I had a 1980s supercharged Italian car that was still going strong at 320,000km and a Nissan Serena that blew up at 120,000km because it looked like it had never had the necessary servicing in Japan. A lot depends on how well previous owners have adhered to the correct servicing.

Consumer stupidity ? Its basic supply and demand - not the demand cause most been there done that - sure motor last thing to go these days but the majority cannot be bothered with the little fark round problems - time is money - hassle factor. You guys keep trucking with your high k cars - I cannot be bothered - just had the run around this week doing inner and outer tie end rods , sway bar linkage , replacement master cylinder that is 15 months old needs replacing - turns out was fitted from day one with the fault. 92 terrano 170k - been treated gentle. Terranos way better than most but nothing lasts forever.

It's way too high priced for it's k's as is the auto one they have.
