How do you search on Trade Me?

hey guys a question for you. How do you search for companies or vehicles on trade me?
Do you type into the search bar the make and model?
Do you refine down to Cars then type in the make/model?
Do you use the search box on the left of the main page?
Or do you search another way?
Reason Im asking is that a trade me "expert" has told me that very few people just type in what they are looking for in the search bar.
I thought that's what the darn thing was for.

I select brand
Choose car or wagon or SUV etc
Select model
Pop in my keywords Diesel-petrol-manual etc
Then pop in a max price and oldest model year limit and maybe a youngest limit as well
Then I search and normally save the search/es as well
Once I have purchased I never look again 'cos that's inviting disappointment.

I go to trade me home page, click on 'motors' twice, select 'cars for sale' choose make of vehicle and choose model. Sometimes I will type in the name of the vehicle in the search bar but the problem with that is you usually end up with a lot of other crap related to what ever you typed in.

Some of you may not be aware that the use of speech marks causes the search engine to look for a string, not individual words.

i.e. Search in All Categories for 8 speed auto will deliver 2405 hits, finding "8", "speed", and "auto". Whereas searching All Categories for "8 speed auto" will find only 218 occurrences.

May depend on WHO is searching?
Folks with a bit of knowledge probably have a fair idea of make/model they want.
others may only know what style they need IE ppl mover, rag-top etc, and dont really care about make/model.
Others may go straight to the 'cheapest' tick-box.

I use the top search bar for anything not motors or property. For motors I use the advanced car search under the left hand search options, it gives more options to set gearbox, mileage, doors etc.

tgray, Aug 28, 1:31pm
I click 'browse' and then 'cars', then fill in the menu on the left with make, model, and year.

dvince, Aug 28, 3:03pm
Set make and max price range.

I don't bother entering anything in 'keywords' as some sellers spam with "swap for TURBO WRX STI NISSAN SKYLINE TOYOTA HILUX UTE MAZDA" etc

kazbanz, Aug 28, 3:07pm
hey tgray. Type in your trading name into the search bar and see what happens.

I find searching for an American Pickup difficult due to many ads having 'pickup from. ' in all categories. Then they're listed in cars, specialist cars & sometimes even trucks. Then on top of that some list there's as 'car' & others as 'ute'. I have put a suggestion to TM of adding to the drop box 'country of origin'

I usually go to the Search Bar, then refine it to suit.

Ok, Im looking for a car for my daughter now.
She wants to spend about $7k on a hatchback, Not to fussed on what it is.
Select "Body Style"-Hatchback
Select "Price" - $4k to $7.5k
Select "Year" - 2003 to any
Select "Location" - BoP
177 to chose from, if nothing suitable, repeat but change "Location" to North Island.
Then do it all again inputting "station wagon" instead of hatchback

seadubya, Aug 28, 4:32pm
Try using advanced car search at the bottom of the blue box, leave body type as any and change doors to 3 only or 5 and above. Can choose gearbox too without having all the "key" words pop up.

For car searching I use the supplied drop downs on the left and choose the specific model I'm looking for. I find if you type a search term like "Mercedes S500" into the general search bar you get all sorts of unrelated bollocks coming back.

cubasesx, Aug 28, 5:14pm
Well, I just did a search and went $15-20k, 2010 onwards, black, manual, auckland. The Mr probably does it differently! But normally I would refine by make, not model (unless I was searching for a specific model, price and year parameters etc

stevo2, Aug 28, 5:57pm
Hey seadubya. I have used advanced but I find if you click "auto" you miss out on "tiptronic" as you cant chose two options.
Its amazing how many sellers don't know the difference between auto, cvt and dsg

intrade, Aug 28, 7:30pm
I type in search rexton diesel manual
Or tdi 4 motion manual
Then go advanced
Then latest listing then lowest price

seadubya, Aug 28, 7:31pm
Yeah, it works great for manual, but anything else and I just leave it as "any" for those exact reasons.

angelab, Aug 28, 9:43pm
Search bar, year, up to 1980, then latest listings. Aye, it's a sickness!

3tomany, Aug 29, 7:52am
just been through it with my son had a broad search first and watchlisted about 30 cars then tried to buy one at turners but it got to expensive. Then after finally deciding on a budget, type of car, mileage etc did a specific search of the car he wanted. Found 4 cars in that bracket of interest in Auckland. Then proceeded to the dealer yards to look at them in person. bought an immaculate one owner car with full service history, good dealer backup. Very happy

desmodave, Aug 30, 7:42am
Type in a brand of Motorcycle etc , or if its car i go with the model and go to latest listings . Check the latest listings frequently and there is a good chance the early bird will get the worm .

3tomany, Sep 1, 8:38am
You are unusually quiet kaz have we been helpful? just wondering.

sifty, Sep 1, 8:41am
I use several different spellings to cater to the high levels of illiteracy on here.

Have scored some bargains as nobody else could find the listings.

seadubya, Sep 1, 9:07am
I got a good, cheap freezer like that, listed in the wrong category under the words "Chist Freazur", strangely enough I was the only bidder.

Have cars looking for in favourites - but initially search bar - only have to type few letters and "up it comes"
