If downgrading and vehicle being traded in is worth similar or more than new vehicle (2nd hand) do car yards ever do straight swaps or does some amount of money need to change hands?

Car yards need to make money, if there is money in the deal then yes, No money to be made then No.

Yes dealers will do straight swaps, some will also pay you cash too, but all depends on the dealer. Remember they are businesses with staff wages, rent power etc etc plus need to turn a profit so they wont swap your (eg) 2007 SUV with 150km for another 2007 SUV with 150km, but they may swap it with no cash changeover for a 2006 Hatchback with 175km. examples only.

I recently sold my Falcon ute. (2003)
I went to a dealer in dunedin that had a van on the lot I was interested in. He offered me 3k, plus the van - so yes they will do straight swaps, or even pay you - as long as at the end of the deal, they sell what they are left with for a profit. I knew 8k was easily acheivalbe privately for my ute, and that he would put it on the lot at 10-11k.
I ended up selling privately after deciding the van he had wasnt what I wanted

Short version is YES its possible to do a swap or Cash your way deals. But the important word is POSSIBLE. If your vehicle is known for mechanical issues or is undesireable then maybe not. What is the vehicle in question[ Make, model, year, miles and what sort of vehicle are you wanting to move into ?
