do you mean the jey or remote locking?
if the battery is flat or central locking unit buggered it wont usually work even on key.
if battey is flat jack up car and hook jump leads onto starter motor to power up the system.
i know on the 7 series the passenger lock is an override lock where you can turn it like normal then it will turn an extra 1/4 turn and unlock that door without electronic aide. apparently very very stiff to turn. not 100% of 5 series is the same

Do NOT smash the window. You will still be locked out. Try turning the key past it's usual stopping point while pulling the handle in both of the front doors. One of them should have a flat battery manual deadlock override position. Best of luck.
Plenty of CRC down the lock barrels before you start . especially if locks haven't been used manually for a while.

Suspect you have aftermarket alarm that has locked you out, if so Google the alarm system.

When I had a 2000 528i if the battery was completely flat I could not open the doors. You are supposed to be able to turn the drivers door key a little bit further (past the initial position) to unlock. On my car I could not.
I could however do this with the boot, which has the same feature. Then I'd have to put jumper leads on to power the battery so I could use the remote to open the doors.
First time this happened it caused me a bit of panic for a while!
