Head gasket leaking - typical cost?

We have a 2009 Hyundai i30, which has done 93000k and we've been told that the head gasket is leaking coolant. We noticed the odd drop of fluid on our garage floor.

We have been quoted $3400 to do the repair. This covers removal of cylinder head, replace gasket, headbolts, waterpump & rocker cover gasket. Flush radiator and cooling system, refill and bleed system. Skim and pressure test cylinder head. Change engine oil and filter and do a 100K service.

Is this the typical cost to repair this?

Had some money saved for other purposes next year, but looks like we going to have to redirect our savings to get this repaired ASAP.

Was this from a Hyundai agent or another garage?

kiwi_harry2, Jul 7, 10:41am
It was from a Hyundai Service Centre near us.

Your local garage should be able to do that job for $2500, Low km for such a repair?.

Has there been any indication that warranty may cover it? It would be worth asking about even considering its age, manufacturers may do this as goodwill if its had dealer service all its life and it has been a known problem.

kiwi_harry2, Jul 7, 10:52am
OK. Will try and get another quote. Anybody have any recommendations for any places out in the West Auckland (New Lynn to Henderson) area?

Yes wasn't expecting this for a 6 y/o vehicle.

kiwi_harry2, Jul 7, 10:58am
We asked if they would cover or subsidise repair cost, but it was rejected.
Car is an import. We are the first NZ owners. Purchased in 2012 from Winger/Hyundai.

I would get a second opinion. most coolant leaks as you describe are external from the basic engine. i.e hoses, clamps, waterpump etc.Does the vehicle overheat,is it using a lot of coolant ?

kiwi_harry2, Jul 7, 11:14am
No, vehicle is not overheating and haven't had to top up coolant. It looks like the fluid just drips infrequently.

pettal, Jul 7, 11:19am
Air condition unit is dripping it's condensation would be worth considering ? .

frytime, Jul 7, 11:22am
Ask dealer for contribution. ?

bjmh, Jul 7, 11:37am
If coolant is leaking it will be coloured,green/red etc depending on vehicle make. what you can do is park your vehicle on a clean piece of cardboard. try and note where the coolant mark on the cardboard is in relation to the vehicle. i.e right front of engine etc. it sometimes helps the person trying to find a small leak. with the info you have given I certainly wouldn't be ripping the head off. yet.

Here is a pic of the fluid deposit on the garage floor. This is about the size of 2 x 50c pieces. http://bit.ly/1Uq0Ke5.

The drops are more right side of engine between mid line to 2/3 towards the front (from drivers perspective)

quickbuck, Jul 7, 12:15pm
So the size of a $1 coin then?

Seriously though:
So you suspect it is coming out from #2? I would be looking closer at the Frost Plugs before starting to tear into a $3000+ Repair!

gmphil, Jul 7, 12:23pm
probably find its a hose joint? chase the pipe coming off the water pump to the hoses in check all fittings

franc123, Jul 7, 1:11pm
OK that's different. Out of interest where was it first registered, Australia? I'd certainly be getting a second opinion on where it is actually leaking from.

kiwi_harry2, Jul 7, 1:36pm
Japan was where it was originally from.

Yes, judging by the responses above I'll to get a 2nd opinion. Still open to any recommendations of mechanics in the New Lynn to Henderson area.

kiwi_harry2, Jul 7, 2:38pm
Thanks for all the responses. Much appreciated

intrade, Jul 7, 4:23pm
yea get to see for your self where fluid leeks from today everyone has a camera ,

frank1, Jul 7, 7:06pm
Did the dealer actually do an independant pressure test on the cooling system?

kiwi_harry2, Jul 7, 7:12pm
I don't think they did. They just explained that they followed the crystallisation trail back.

quickbuck, Jul 7, 7:20pm
I have many components turn up in my workshop where they suspected to be leaking only to find that the "Fluid Trail" actually started somewhere else. The stuff I deal with is Hydraulic, however the person diagnosing it suffers from the same issue. They think that once they have found the source there is no point looking any further.

In this case, it sounds like they went to "worst case".
