WOF Fail on boot not opening. Never failed before

69cookie, Mar 8, 1:50pm
Just taken car in for a warrant and because the lever doesn't pop the boot open they failed it, the boot does open with the key. It has never failed before. Can they fail it for this?
Thanks

It has to be opened to check for rust in certain areas and to make sure it latches ok - but how it opens is irrelevant, it just has to open. and close.

Thanks so much for that, that's what I thought,

This'll be a VTNZ I take it? I no longer bother with warrants from them, as the staff dont seem to be very onto it.

Gosh, that is unfair.

While a lot of modern hatch backs don't have a key barrel to open the tail gate, it would be fair to fail in that situation.

But for heavens sake! Why wouldn't the inspector just unlock it with your key?

This was Blenheim Testing Station, was the first time I have been there, always been to garages before this, will call LTSA and see what I can find out on Monday.

Remove the leaver, problem solved.

I explained to him that the boot didn't open with the lever and you need to use the key. It latches fine its all good just need to use the key to unlock

Also check the lock itself, a lot have a switch on them that can be moved to stop the boot from being able to be opened with the internal leaver.

Have done all that, I think I have worked out that the gas struts might have enough power in them to left the boot for it to release completely. Pulled the latch to pieces all working good.

My latest acquisition only has a key for the boot opening. I see several every day so I presume they all have a current Wof. The front luggage area/bonnet can only be opened from a lever inside the boot, which is a bit weird.

No they can't, it doesn't matter how the bootlid is opened as long as it can be opened. Older cars could only be opened with the key anyway!

+1
Seems that anything that exists needs to work, whether it's needed or not. Remove lever and since you can still use key it still opens.
Stupid.

Sounds like BS.A boot unlike a passenger door is not a safety issue,in terms of which way it can be opened.

motorboy2011, Mar 8, 6:00pm
I had to argue reverse wasnt a wof issue.

Our Primera has the problem as ours has the spoiler. To use the lever is a two person job. One to pull and one to lift.

nzmax, Mar 8, 6:59pm
The Maximas with the factory spoiler have the opening tension increased to counteract the spoiler weight so the boot pops up enough, compared to the non spoiler ones. Have owned both in the past. You could glue a rubber tap washer onto the existing rubber stopper thingey on the underside edge of bootlid or replace it with a longer one. That might help. the trade off is it will be harder to push down to close.

All our "levers" get a bit that way over time.
