I ain't no old timer. Just sharing my experience in the last workshop I was in. I
Have a cheap Lincoln electric helmet. It is handy but I wish had spent a bit more money for a better one. I am missing grinding mode and shade 5 otherwise works well

you can get 'goggles' auto darkening for welding, last time I checked about $400

I have a Miller auto darkening helmet that is a great unit to use, can get all the parts for it and the headband is very comfortable, best thing since sliced bread in my opinion, heres what it is.

Looks fine, at that sort of money you can guess it won't be perfect, but enough to learn with.

My auto darkening helmet stays on the wall, I prefer a standard lid. Bloody things are hopeless when you are working close to another welder,

there only good with Pinex rods for welding 12ply

if the lights enough to trigger the helmet, you should consider using curtains to protect yourself
