except its illegal to overtake on a flush median barrier.

That is actually quite a brilliant solution - use their incompetence and abysmal perception to achieve better traffic flow, and get around the legality by painting in a manner that has the same psychological effect as a flush median but is not actually the same in reality - saem pattern but differnet shades perhaps?

if it looks like something else the police will get no end of complaints about idiots overtaking and it would be soon removed. even if police don't remove it, people will soon realize that its a passing lane and you will be back to the same problem.
also practicabilities like painted surfaces are slippery. not something you want to be overtaking on in the wet.
it would be enormously expensive to do and achieve nothing. i would much prefer they spend money fixing the roads rather than wasting it trying to fool people.
half the problem is the penpushes who get sucked with this BS reports and actually think people 'accidentally' drop two gears and floor it, then 'accidentally' stand on the brakes at the end. the problem will never be fixed when the penpushers have got their heads up their arse.

Well then here's another workable gem, Double yellow lines on the slow lane, with the inner yellow line, squeezing the lane down to a size, that would have the required psychological affect of reducing the speed of the slow and cautious. It'd also serve the purpose of stopping the shy and timid thinking they can pull out to pass an even slower user.

so how do you get a truck to fit without crossing the lines? lanes are narrow as they are. also all that will happen is the slow driver will simply drive in the wider lane and the overtaking traffic will use the narrow one to undertake.

Start with a widely marked slow lane for the first 100m (+or-) and then narrow it for the rest of distance. It'll make the slow ones automatically go left and stay there and the narrowing should have the desired affect.
If this isn't up to your own profound ideas and findings I suggest using the Horn and flashing h/lights like i do. Or better still wave fists and scream obscenities if you're not on the phone may work.
Looking forward to your own valued input as would be the NZTA.

the only real way is to actually police the law. go pull these people over and actual find out why. i'll bet most don't look at their speedo. they where probably never taught how to drive well. the worse ones most likely simply do not have a license or have been sitting on learners for 10 years. probably got a whole range of social issues.
its a people problem and they will always continue to do it until actually caught. no road change will ever change the mind set. its no different to all the other stupid stuff that 'does the rounds'.
its possible that the articles and tv coverage thats has been saying "its ok its not your fault that you do it" is going to make it worse.
NZTA has got to stop kidding themselves that its "accidental" when its bleeding obvious to any driver that it isn't. those people do have their own reasons why they do it even tho most will never ever say what it is.

Have to say that, on reflection, education through the TV media is worth a try. Examples of bad driving practices recorded (and screened) at various places in relation in what is right and legal as opposed to totally stupid would be a start. Actually showing the idiots, what they do and then, what they "Should" do could have some merit. Passing lanes, Round a bouts, and on ramps of motorways would be 3 main target points. Screened as "Are you one of NZs Dumb Drivers" and in a Police10/7 format may be of value to the Inconsiderate, incompetent morons that proliferate our already problematic roads.

i agree, education is very good and is sorely needed.
its amazing that people will ask/listen to the piss head at the pub rather than go read the road code. just like the sitting on learners issue, people are not interested in learning how do it. so any education you can do as entertainment is a winner.

Motor bikes scattered all over the place in the wet ?

Trouble there is that if you can see it, it has seen you first.

Flush median, and median barrier are two different things. You are confused.

Modify this a bit further to get rid of the couple of objections to it: 90 speed limit LH lane 110 speed limit RH lane but also a Minimum speed of 100 RH lane

And if heavy loaded unit in left lane is struggling at 50kmph, another unloaded heavy unit ( max legal speed 90kmph) cannot pull out and pass ?
You can juggle this idea as much as you like - but in the reality of real life - can it be made to work ?
