Cutting out catalytic converter

..james.., Dec 23, 4:26pm
Hi , My Oddesseys CC is all rattly as its breaking down inside. Is there a way of just "gutting"the inside of it that anyone recommends? Chipping out or such? Thanks.

replace it with a piece of pipe. If your car is newer than 2000 then you cant (someone might correct me on the year), so best way would be to slice the cat in half, remove the guts then weld it back up.

2010

Undo it and knock the plates out.they break away easily.wear a face mask doing it.replace job done.

Just bear in mind that any scrap metal place will give you at least $35 for the cat.

2get1, Dec 23, 5:45pm
you can cut one end off, then use a bar down the pipe at the other end to break it up and smash the guts out, then weld the end back on. only takes a few minutes, yes wear mask and the fine particles are like dust and go everywhere. if you do it inside on a sunny day you can see them hanging in the air, so very breathable. if you cut the cat out, and replace with pipe, they are actually worth something at the scrap metal yard

Would one use a chisel? or screw driver with a hammer? I am guessing its all self explanatory once i see it. Its a 2001 so its ok to do this as I understand. Thanks.

Will it still get a WOF? If you do get a WOF for it, what sort of dodgy place would do that? What else don't they care about on your car?

trackim, Dec 23, 6:10pm
Don't know about Hondas but you may have engine warning light come up as it can affect the oxygen sensors?

2get1, Dec 23, 6:13pm
if you cut one end off, smash the guts out and weld then end back on even VTNZ don't notice it at WOF time. They have no way of knowing if its an empty shell or not.

the sensor that's plugged in is more often than not the temp one that lights up on the dash when the cat becomes clogged and overheats.

ive never had a problem with any of the vehicles Ive done it to

what year is it ? the o2 sensors have to stay on there . on newer cars you will get a catalisator inneficiency code when the cat is no longer doing its job
on my 95 corolla all you get is it dont enters closed loop operation , i have a video showing that and a video same engine with a working o2 from a client.
the closed loop is on dead 02 sensor cat melts down if front sensor is gone for to long. and rear sensor is there to see if cat is doing the job. my corolla only has 1 sensor befor the cat.

Just unbolt the cat, then use a hammer and chisel to smash the innards out. stick the hose in if your worried about the dust. when it's hollowed out, bolt it back into place. vouloir

Its an 01 and from what Ive found as Stonello said is that the CC isn't required before 2010.
No warning light has come on . yet. So probably not all blocked up yet?
Why is it worth a bit to the scrap merchant? Thats interesting and good news if I replace it with pipe or wreck it.

intrade, Dec 23, 6:48pm
older cat have platinum inside them that is what the $$ would be .
you can unplug the 02 sensor on the cat and see if a light turns on it wont melt it when you unplug the rear o2 the rear sensor mesures if the cat has stored oxygen and tells the engine computer this information.
if its unplugged then it wont tell and that be the test if the light turns on on dashboard or not.

stornello, Dec 23, 6:49pm
When did we start doing emissions testing of cars for a WoF? Even after the 2010 point, no one is going to know if the cat has been gutted. if it's cut out then it's a fail.

intrade, Dec 23, 6:55pm
it works like this syplified the cat is a firebox , and you need what for a fire?
fuel and air so how does it get air in a catalisator you ask
well by running the engine lean for a secound and then it needs fuel in the fire box. so it overfuels the engine for a secound , this way both air and fuel make it in the catalisator to light it up and burn the emissions .
now yours is cracked and rattles that dont means its not still doing some oxygen storing , and that is what the rear o2 sensor mesures if the cat has stored oxigen means it will read less oxigen after the cat.
if it mesures the same oxigen as the senor up front then it will tell the ecu the cat is inneficient and the ecu turns on check engine light with a code for catalisator inneficiency as a example.
This is why you unplug it and see if a light comes on or not but only the one after the catalysator

also i dont know if the parts smashing a cat out is dangerous to your health. i dont know the whole cemestry might do one day , i got more important things to learn , but if you do cut it out you need a resonator in its place as a catalisator is a big restriction and you cant just remove restrictions from a design and replace it with 0 restriction .

stornello, Dec 23, 7:05pm
The cats not restrictive. but removing it does create a big empty space. slows gas speed in that area, could upset a few things.

bigfatmat1, Dec 24, 9:08pm
Gen 3 odyssey 2004 all have cat monitoring. So after this date a fault code p420 cat inefficiency.will be set. check light on.

bigfatmat1, Dec 24, 9:11pm
Are you sure it's your cat. Not extremely worn plugs or ignition timing to advanced. all can sound like stones in your exhaust.

wizid, Dec 25, 7:30am
i have just guttered my 02 skyline . catalytic converter. and put them back on . car goes much better .

inkapuka, Dec 25, 9:29pm
I'm replacing 2nd cat on speed3 with 3" stainless pipe to go wit 3"stainless cat back system more flow going be a bit better for it

craigs_workshop, Apr 28, 1:30pm
lol

but yes, is best to have a "same size" pipe running thru your newly gutted cat to see an actual performance boost
