Kaz or others - bikes and imports

tigertim20, Jan 2, 1:39pm
Kaz, I am considering importing a bike, or possibly two from japan.
They will never be on the road, they will be track and project bikes, so it doesnt matter about being able to register.

I jut not sure where to start looking to find a bike supplier. Would be the first time doing this so would appreciate some direction!

Tim-there are bike auctions in Japan similar to car auctions. Shipping though I genuinely haven't a clue.

Plenty about if you use uncle google - most sellers arrange the shipping

If you dont see what you like, tell him what you want . ISI.com if ya want to work alone

What bikes do you want ? . Some of what you see at Japan auctions can have a serious amount of bling fitted . You can also buy from Bike shop if you don't want to bid at auction . If you find a NZ van importer they may let you put it in the back of 1 .

Shipping for one or two bikes is difficult even if you find a van importer who is going to get them from the bike auction to wherever the van is? The logistics will be difficult unless you are going to Japan to view and bid.

I'd try and find a tame importer in your city to included your purchases in his container.

It's not uncommon for other dealers to buy off the same person i have mentioned . I like to cut out the middle man when ever i can .

Don't want to piss on your parade but freight isn't cheap and very few importers just happen to have space in a container let alone enough for a couple of motorbikes. Half full containers arent shipped.
Secondly even fewer importers are going to say "yeah chuck whatever you like in my container" as most are concerned at what Customs may find in those bikes on arrival. If not drugs or prohibited material any undervaluation will impact on the importer of the container. Would you offer to carry that muslims bag onto the plane or offer to carry that Colombians parcel through immigration - no
Secondly the primary importer may arrange fumigation but cannot certify such for the motorcycles.
Thirdly, having third party goods in a container makes delivery to store or other transitional area difficult at the NZ end.
Summary - don't rely on chucking your bikes in with other goods.

thanks, I will give that link a go!

thanks kaz, Im still at the point where Im just looking for sellers that are trustworthy for a start!

tim I'd be interested to know what the bikes you are looking at actually are. The reason being that jap spec may well mean lower HP or a fair bit of work needed to get the bike to track ready. In some cases the USA and even (believe it or not) the UK are a better source when you take into account the cost to get the bike up to track ready condition.

i'll read it all later but just saying that if you buy in nz make sure of it's imported history [where from]. boy bought a gsxr750 20 or so years ago and spent the rest of his ownership trying to get it as good as his first model gsxr750. had strangled small diameter pipes plus cams carbs and probably ignition [more]. beautiful immaculate bike though. bought from a dealer in nz but dare say he knew it was an import. same thing happened at work when a work mate bought a tzr250 reverse cylinder model--import--to race, and spent so much time trying to get it up to the power of those being raced here at the time--the non ex japan models--and failed dismally without spending moonbeams on bits.

Hey Kaz, Id be looking at anything 600 or 1000cc, and injected would be really my only parameters at this stage.

It isnt going to be a race bike, so really dont care if its a few HP down on something else I really just want a project that I can pull apart and turn into a track toy.
I have quite a nice R1 that has got quite a few bucks in it, but I would prefer to keep that for the road, and have something worth a lot less that I wont cry myself to sleep at night if I crash it.

there are obviously no gaurantees on condition, and thats fine, I wouldnt expect one if I bought something privately for the same purpose here either, and I wont have to bother with getting it legal as it will be strictly a toy I can thrash and it doesnt matter if it gets dropped or beaten up
