went to get wof on a HX Holden (been of road for few years, reg on hold) & was told car needs a driveshaft loop? never had 1 originally so not sure why have to fit 1 now, not exspensive to buy,$50, & ez enuff to fit, just wondering why this has come in.

Have you repowered to higher horsepower or transplanted a V8 when originally a 6? Should not need a loop if original running gear is still in place.

Yep you fit an aftermarket hop & then you need a cert for the mounts.
Get the idea.
Tell the inspector to recheck the virm for specific age related items for that year

It's really simple.
Are there any FACTORY mounting brackets for a hoop?

yeh, repowered with V8 but only 308 & auto which was a factory fitted power plant, (but this unit is from a later WB Stateman) car was a factory 8 so don't need cert.

Others might remember the release of the HQ ute in NZ. More than one dropped the driveshaft onto the road. I had 2 in the fleet which were fine, but my cousins one (6 cylinder manual) dropped a driveshaft at speed, left the road and written off. A loop may have been fitted as a recall - can't remember now.

no factory mount holes, have never came across any in earlier H series HQ-HZ Holdens,a mate has told me he needed 1 in his XM Falcon too when he put it back on road, still had original motor & box, driveshaft so hes wondering why he had to as well.

had a XA with a 460 that I wished had 1 ,bloody uni`s shat themselves after doin a few skids & I was lucky it dropped while at a low speed or I could of polevaulted over in2 the on coming traffic instead!

Are you sure you don't need a cert just because it was a factory option? It is still a change in config for that car from a 6 to an 8, so different / modified engine, mounts, trans, driveshaft, diff(?), springs, brakes (don't know if 6 & 8 brakes were different). When I certed my HQ (Had Chev 383) I had to fit a driveshaft loop too. Don't see that you should have to fit one to an unmodified car like your mate had to though, and would argue that point. I've never seen a factory hoop in any H series Holden. Would be very surprised.

I had an XA with 460 / C6 / 9" years back (in Auckland though). Dark Grey. Miss that car, sold it to help fund a house :-( Declaration only required in those days, definitely no hoops then !

Doesn`t matter if that engine was specific for that model, if you`ve repowered the car to a higher than original horsepower and capacity ( What was the original V8 ? ). I`m not sure of the rules but think it`s 25% or something bigger than original. Check the link below. Hope this helps.
Thanx Pete, great link, yeh was a 308 originally,5000 cc, but they deem it more powerfull as I have fitted aftermarket parts, headers, alloy inlet & bigger carb so more than 25% increase, don't mind fitting the loop as will be safer,my mates still scatching his head thow. will go back this arvo for wof & see what they say about his Ford, ive printed out those fact sheets too take with me, Cheers

terry--Ill be honest with ya matey. I'd just keep my mouth shut and fit a loop as requested. Im just thinking that in this case if they dig into it you might be up for a passle more issues to resolve than just a loop. I get that "right is right" but equally its your pocket the money has to come out of for anything else they "find"

No worries Terry. Not sure about the tunnel in your car, but for fitment in my Charger I had to grind the bolt threads that go through the two halves of the loop to stop them fouling against the drive shaft. Be sure about the 150mm back from the front Uni Joint for mounting. My certifier was a bit anal about the little things like that. Hope this helps. Cheers

As far as I can see there is no provision for a WOF tester to insist you fit a loop unless it was a OE item and has now been removed. If as you say your new engine is over 25% more powerful then it should be a wof reject on that point and will require a cert. In the circs I'd be fitting the loop and just smiling nicely at the WOF guy.

Careful, if you get the drive shaft hoop i got I had to make a new handbrake cable hanger and modify the length of the handbrake cable. There was also a distance it had to be from the front drive shaft universal joint. 150mm i think. There is only 1 place that it fits the floor pan. Takes about 3 -4 hrs fitting time. Fitted to a 1979 HZ ute with a 253 and 3 on the tree, upgraded from a 173.
