Headlining

what sort /brand of adhesive do you use to re glue it to the backing?

tamarillo, Feb 22, 10:51am
DONT, I looked in to this a lot and found some had managed with very high temp glue by 3M that seems hard to get in small amounts - it seems to be in trade. But then i found you also need stuff to neutralise the surface first. Then I looked at buying proper headlining. Then my local upholsterer did it for $140 cash all up with correct material and glue. Would have cost me more in parts.

and i found stories of people who tried and later regretted it.

ok I tried with rattle can of spray glue, would of got from supercheap megas 10 or a likes worked great for a bit then cam down so did it again .till I realised wot was wrong ! it was the board the linning was attached to . was a commy of course notorious for this , I gentle rubbed my hand arcoss it and it cam down like snow so don't matter how many times glued ! the board was perished of pick part found a mint one in replaced

the foam backing on the fabric has broken down. You need to remove the board from the car and clean ALL the old foam off the board. With the old foam removed from the fabric it will be too thin to glue to . Kerrys Upholstery in Levin will sell you new foam backed fabric ,or will glue it to your backing board ,or will do the complete job for about $300 depending on the vehicle . Ring them in the morning and discuss it with either Kerry or Mark. They are extremely helpful . The other option is to hold the fabric up with a few well placed drawing pins

^^ ha ha prev owner has done just that with drawing pins , but yeah at that price i wont bother DIY , just had someone tell me $500 + its for my rangie

It's $500+ because they can see $$$$ when you pull up in the Rangie.

The previous owner on my old e36 BMW did the same but with small screws screwed into the headboard in a checkerboard config, i was going to replace it but actually really liked the way it was done so kept it as is.

did you pull it out yourself? That is the huge bulk of labour so don't blame them.
Getting them in and out is easy but time consuming. Once off you can scrap off pretty much all the foam crap.
I've done it twice, first one was $210 I think, last one was $140 cash cause he's a good guy. That was for audi station wagon and I allowed him to use the cream lining he had in stock, obviously if your picky and want original look they have to get it and that's cost more.

that's funny I see tears.

Yeah mines been done in a pattern with matching fabric covered pins , but I like to try things myself now im a pensioner got all the time in world , might see if i can stick it up with F2 adhesive As Jc says how hard can it be . .

tamarillo, Feb 24, 6:24am
Very, it won't work, mths fabric is foam backed and it's the foam that disintegrates in the heat, hence material falls off foam. Trouble is ain't nothing is going to stick the material back to the crumbling foam.

Since you have time, and assuming your reasonable agile, get it out, clean off foam and if you really can't affordcproper stuff get something from spotlight and stick it on. Won't have foam behind but better than nothing!
You might find upholstery place take pity and sell you off a roll end of random headlining material?
You'll need very high temp glue.

I did my VN lining a few years ago. Bought the materials off a bloke I haven't seen here for a while. Ados spray can. The cardboard lining was wire brushed to remove everything not wanted, spray both items, lay carefully, roll down. Still perfect to this day!

You most certainly did.

This was 14 years ago, but I had the headlining replaced in my old Alfa Romeo 75. Had it retrimmed in that black race seat material, done at the motor trimmers in Blenheim, drive in, drive out, $120.

To be fair, if it was a special material they got in for you that can be costly.
