i've had vehicles rust out before. its not that fast that it goes from nothing to fail-able in 6 months.
get a copy of the last wof sheet, it should have comments about the minor rust. if it hasn't then its dodgy wof and inspector will go for a slide.

Im sure the comments section isn't compulsory or legally binding - more of a "FYI"
There is no way you can prove the state of rust in a car six months ago.

If you didn't get car professionally checked out then then suck it up

Leave the WOF guy alone.

most wof guys i've seen use comments section to cover themselves in case something happens later on.
i've had comments about rust etc or worn steering written on.
good to inform the customer and also covers the wof guy.
even the dodgy wof guys i know do that and they are hard on cars they know are getting sold. they look after their arse first.

i've had cars sit outside not used for years and rust doesn't go that quick.

why should we leave wof guys alone? they are require to inspect to a standard and considering that its a safety standard, its extremely important that its done correctly.
it may be that the customer pays the ultimate price.

So, what have you done about these Dodgy Wof Guys that you know? Is this based on suspicion or actual fact? Have you let NZTA know about your concerns? Just curious.

tweake, Apr 5, 4:29pm
in the cases that i know of they had complaints made against them. i never did hear what the final result was.

Just as things slip into the back of the mind BANG here it is again

timbo69, Apr 5, 6:58pm
Prove it wasn't done correctly. otherwise go to bed.

just off another forum with reply posted tonight .

]took it in for a check over with my local mechanic today even though it has a brand new W.O.F only to be told it should never have passed let alone be on the road.

At this point I Have paid out but just awaiting the vehicle licencing report to come back which isnt looking good for the WOF station and seemingly its not there first offence either and then its off to small claims court to recover costs from the WOF issuer.
The truck was actually worse than first thought so it will be very costly for them in the finish.

"it has a brand new W.O.F"

This WOF probably isnt 6 months old. But my comments would depend on details to really comment - tyres can get bald in 2 minutes you know

tweake, Apr 5, 7:53pm
"It needs 4 new brake lines,
both top and bottom balljoints both sides plus locking pins were missing.
New shocks (there is none in NZ and have to be imported from oz ) .
front and rear sway bar bushes plus drawbar is bent out of shape."

i'm guessing there is other things wrong as well.

point of the post is there is dodgy wof guys out there but there is recourse. tho i think getting $$ out of them is unlikely unless someone can twist their arm.

Still like to know what sort of car this is

sw20, Apr 6, 5:25am
What a load of horseshit?

You couldn't check the vehicle as it was bought online? You travel to the vehicle and check it yourself, or engage the services of a car inspection outfit or trusted garage in the area. If you don't, it's on you.

intrade, Apr 6, 7:41am
when do you people get it that a wof is not a service of a vehicle its only a sticker on your windscreen so the police wont give you a instant fine.
The wof places should be sued for there rubbish they tell car owners !
the government said they would run tv adds to educate people about the wof that it is only a snapshot at this verry time the car was no danger to be operated on the road at this day.
this is what a wof is , police run around with pink and green stickers and infringment notice booklets to try and make money from anyone who operates a vehicle not up to wof standard since years now.
So we dont even need any wof we need car owners who start taking responsebility for operating there vehicles.
but vtnz tell you the oposite of that and how save they make your car if you pay them more money for testing things they got noe clue about to start with.

franc123, Apr 6, 9:20am
You make a good point, the vehicle operator education programme at this stage has amounted to 'check your wipers, tyres and lights regularly' printed across the bottom of the WOF label! And what about these TWIRL random tests, has anybody here been TWIRLed at a random licence/breath test? The bottom line is they are for the most part only going to check something that an obvious POS with boyracer mods that's a prime candidate for stickering.

andrew1954, Apr 6, 9:23am
I think you have two chances at getting VTNZ to pay anything. None and bugger all !
Of course when the car was purchased, the buyer had proffessional pre-purchase inspection done, and they did not comment or note any rust ?

tweake, Apr 6, 1:04pm
but they don't.
if they removed wof who would enforce it? police, don't make me laugh.
you would have to have a team of specialists to check them. to costly to go to every car so you would need to have them bring the car in. just like the wof system ;)
and without enforcement most people simply won't do it.

catwoman1974, Apr 7, 11:14pm
Sounds like bog and paint before the last WOF.

bjmh, Apr 8, 5:52am
sorry its not that easy,i got caught by a smart ass cockie who brought a ute in covered in mud. i inspected it,gave it a wof . cocky traded it in.The dealer on sold it . 9 months later with an expired wof the ute was sold at auction, then a wof inspector noticed rust in the chassis rail behind the fuel tank, the mud had covered it.The wof trail came all the way back to me ,I was the one who didn't see the rust.I ended up paying a portion of the rust repair, mta said it wasn't my problem, but I felt morally that it was.

mrfxit, Apr 8, 7:14am
Heres the truth about rust.

Different types of steel
In
Specific locations
From different vehicle brands & models
And
Same brands but different models

Rust faster or slower then others used for different purposes & stored in or out of a dry shed
*********************
ok .

Taking all that in to consideration, it's not hard for an experienced panel beater to determine what degree of rust is likely to have happened within a specific time frame.

tweake, Mar 23, 4:00am
mud covered vehicles are much the norm here.
i do know people who have had their car fail wof for being to dirty. they have to clean it before inspection. not an easy thing to do when you have to drive muddy roads to get into town.
