E60 5 series

Hi there has anyone had much to do with these?
I'm thinking about buying either the 530i or 550i, what ever is the better buy at the time. Will be looking at the 08/09 models, but how do these fare over time?
They've been out since 2003 so have these earlier cars shown up any common dramas at around the ten year mark, or earlier.
Would those who've spent a bit of time with these E60s say a faclifted e39 540i be a better option. Although most E39s are getting up there in the miles now. Cheers.

Guy at work has a 2004 520 , and the gearbox cost $7K to fix. Buy one that has a warranty.

For most needs the 530 is enough, and has plenty of grunt. Solid machines, but of course like any modern car if something like gearbox fails it will cost. Can do huge miles, lovely car.

go for an LCI Model, this came out late in 2007 and features a lot of improvements the 530i Model in this facelift model has over 200kw, so plenty of power, but still decent fuel economy.

The LCI (Life Cycle Impulse) model was released in 2007. This LCI model included a facelift of the front and rear end of the vehicle. This update included a new front bumper, fog lights, headlights, tail lights and trunk. The interior was also slightly remodelled as well and included changes to door handles, position of power window buttons, updated iDrive with shortcut buttons(for late 2008) models, sleeker gear change lever for the auto transmission. Besides these changes, the 5 Series gained new engines, transmission and an updated iDrive from the BMW X5.

Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function, Adaptive Headlights, LED rear lights, Lane Departure Warning, Brake Force Display became available.
