Douglas DC3 at the South Pole :)

Ok - its not a 'real' one, it is a turboprop conversion.
But it still looks beautiful flying against a fantastic backdrop.

TV One +1 at about 7:45. ( may be on even earlier )

proven reliability that you can fix with a hammer and duct tape, not that theres anything to go wrong on them. Just the perfect machine for an environment like that.

Um - Close. It was stranded there for a while, a breakdown - but I never found out what actually went wrong.

Interesting site.

(Great video on the manufacturing page).

Yep - thats the one. The stranded one had its picture in the Herald last year. I could make out the Basler name on the side.

New electrical system, new hydraulic system, new avionics, turbo prop conversion. No hammer or duct tape on board this aircraft.

The twin Otter is a bit of a flying work horse.

I have a friend based in Calgary Canada. His job takes him all over the country - a Twin Otter is the only plane he will fly in. ( which is kinda easy - as there are not many other choices! )

Seems a shame to take the sound of those twin radials away - but that's a pretty bloody awesome retro-mod.

Oh yes! I spent a couple of weeks helping my mum shift into her new place at Taupo one summer. Right under the take off path of the Catalina climbing out from the lake doing joy rides.

My early days as an air passenger included DC3, DC6, DC7, Super Connie - But unfortunately did not include Pan Am Boeings, and too late for a Solent trip. :(

My ear is sort of 'tuned' to engines in a circle :)

Most impressive was the Hawker Sea Fury with the Bristol Centaurus at full cry. :)

That's one hell of a radial in the Hawker!

Sorry - didn't read what I saw. Thought you wrote Hawker Hunter.

As in that Tv series Air Alaska ,new parts almost unobtainable & eventually running out of cannibilised parts . Radials bitch in the freezing weather to get the things to turn over &start in the morning unless electric blankets on all night & with oil sitting in bottom combustion chambers .

Spent many hours with my late father in law topdressing with a DC3, Amazing runs like D'Urville Island out of Paraparumu, Walter Peak Station from Queenstown and even once on Stewart Island from Invercargill. Loader driver used to load his Mini Cooper in the back so there was transport at the remote strips.
That turbo conversion would have got him excited.
