My Mums 2001 Demio, the Auto trans has expired - the car runs in limp mode.160k on the clock. Garage estimates $3k to get it back on the road so we figure its not worthwhile. The question is; do we take it to the scrapyard & get $100 for it or is it worth a bit more to a wrecker? Note I live in Maungaturoto so nearest wrecker is Whangarei, thanks.

Sell it on here for $100 reserve. Show lots of photos of the car, someone might have pranged one with a good gearbox.

It's funny. If this thread was about a 14 year old European car with a stuffed transmission, then the Jappa brigade would be all over it. Denouncing it as unreliable Euro crap . LOL

I'd get a second or even third opinion, First off the old demios had pretty darn good transmissions and second because they were so good they are cheap as chips second hand

What exactly are you getting for the $3k? You could get a warrantied used trans fitted for far less than that, agree with kaz.

Yes. Get expert opinion first. Might get nice surprise. Got torque converter fixed on a bmw, and that was it, just that, not gearbox as I was told.

Someone is pulling your chain in a fairly big way. They have two transmissions. "tin hat " or no tin hat. Either way you will pay $300 plus freight for the transmission and about $500 for fitting. So all up I'd allow $1000 with fluids. This isn't numbers from thin air stuff. This is based on available boxes just in west Auckland. TO be clear this is a 2001 model demio. 2002 and newer are a totally different vehicle but of course the car also has a totally diferent value

It's worth around $3500 all fixed, so spend the $1000 if you have to (as per above post) and you are still miles ahead. Want more advice? DONT spend $3000 getting it fixed and DONT sell it for $100 to a wrecker.
