Interesting Irony.

Note the topic and the Barry Crump video in the bottom.
Well in the late 70's Barry took off from a Whakatane intersection with his dogs tied on the back of a flatdeck. He went a bit quick and they ended up hanging by their necks being dragged along behind. I know this because my Father was working on the corner at the time and managed to sprint across and stop him. I just hope the new legislation stipulates that the leash be short enough not to allow them over the side. Otherwise it will be yet another stupid rule that costs us a fortuen and only makes things worse.

Mate of mine came to visit. As I came outside I see his dog hanging off the side of the ute by a chain. It was just hanging there, still as. looked dead as a door knob.

I rushed over and unhooked it. Mate was almost in tears. It wasn't breathing. He gave it mouth to nose. Believe it or not he revived it lol. Brought back to life. I think he learnt a little lesson that day.

It's amazing how they can come back to life. Had a stock agent run over a relatives dog. He was obviously an animal guy and would have checked it out well before telling my relative he was dead. He offered to drop him off in the offal pit at the meat works on his way past so my relatives wife didn't have to see him.

3 weeks later someone hears barking from the new offal pit (so no food or water down there as not used yet). Dog is alive, lost an eye and had a bung leg but was alive. Goodness knows what it did for water in that time, condensation perhaps?

That aside, your story confirms my concern about chains. I do worry this will make things worse not better.

Never use a chain or collar for our dogs. Just a real good quality harness, no fear of strangulation or choking even when on a walk. People who use chains and collars to hitch a lead should attach the held end to a choker chain or collar around their own necks, so they understand what the poor dogs go through, it's in a word "abuse".

Make the dogs leash short enough so it won't be able to jump over the fence & hang itself too.
Its happened a few times from what I've been told.

tim41, Jul 20, 5:23pm
you don't tie dogs near the sides ,always put the chain in the centre of the deck and make it short enough so the dog or dogs cant get to the outside.if you've got a few dogs get a dog box-pretty simple really

my 2 dogs are tied to an eye screwed into the middle of the back of the cab, both leads are just long enough for the dogs to reach the sides but not go over (I also thought it already was a legal requirement for a dog not to be able to reach past the vehicle sides anyway).

Your an uncaring pack of animals, my mate rides shotgun in the cabin !

Have actually seen a lot of small dogs sitting on the drivers lap while the owner is driving .

friendly_prawn, Jul 20, 6:18pm
haha, like your style.

Where's the irony?

poppy62, Jul 20, 6:50pm
As does ours, wouldn't dream of putting a chain/collar around the grand kids necks and tying them to the back of a ute/other and our dogs are "probably" more loved than the G/kids! Hmmmm! Mind you, it may be a way of solving the, kicking, screaming, whingeing and fighting in the backseats.

You are right it has been a legal requirement for at least 10years or more. Just most people remain ignorant!

Yep exactly what I was thinking as I started reading this thread.
Was pretty sure theres a law regarding length of chain & a center hitch on headboard of the tray

In Aussie, it appears to be part of the "insecure load" regs.

Also
https://www.stuff.co.nz/business/farming/105574157/bugger-mpi-tightens-dogonute-law Appears to be several regs that can be applied for not tying the dog correctly. http://www.legislation.govt.nz/act/public/1996/0013/latest/DLM374410.html?search=ts_act_dog+control_resel&p=1&sr

Crumpy was probably pissed!not new having a short chain ffs just common sense isn't it,?!

tony9, Jul 21, 12:22am
That is good, they will get the protection of the air bag in the event of an accident.

Medium sized dogs should be restrained in child car seats, the children can be thrown in the back or boot.

Race spec dog seat belts.

Yea. sure

As is often the case!

BTW: I’ve seen a dog that wasn’t chained to the Ute jump off to have a go at another dog across the road - only to be cleaned up by a car going the other way.
