Hi Just curious to the process of putting a car into my name, that is currently listed as persons unknown? It's all legit, and I know the details of the last person who owned it. Is it just the same as a normal change of ownership? Thanks

The previous owner has probably already completed their portion online without entering your details, which is why it shows as person unknown from memory.

You have to do it yourself, either online with your drivers licence or at an NZTA agent. Bear in mind that what you are referring to isn't actually a change of ownership, its a change of registered legal responsibility for that vehicle, you need to be getting a proper bill of sale from the seller. What's referred to as Ownership Papers these days is a pretty uninformative printout stating basic vehicle details and the name of the person or entity that is liable for the bills the Police or NZTA are going to be posting. It's otherwise not even as useful as toilet paper.

I would suggest you contact the 0800 number to establish what has happened. There are a couple of options I can think of that are not "all legit"

No I know exactly what happened lol. It's my car, that was still in my exs name, as under finance, and he was paying (he got the other, better car freehold) Got paid off, and I was a bit slow to put into my name (I'm useless with that sort of thing. I mentioned I was thinking about selling it as now all paid off, so he jumped the gun and took it out of his name and into persons unknown because he thought I had a reason for not putting into my name faster. I just got it fixed, so want to start using it, and put rego on it, just wasn't sure if it was a diff process than the standard one

I could be wrong, but my thoughts are; car purchased under ex's name. Payments made, under ex's name. Car now freehold, under ex's name. Do you have anything to say it is now yours to do what you want with?

Well, not in writing. However there is no dispute between us it's mine, I've had it for 4 years, and he was the one who came over to fix it for me just the other week. Things are very amicable. The ECU computer became corroded so wasn't being used. I bought another one, and he installed and programmed it for me, and made me another key (BMW) He was just under the impression it was illegal to change into someone elses name while under finance. He got the other BMW worth twice as much, so paid the amount owing on the finance. I've been paying the rego, and the WOF and repairs the whole time, and he would happily put it in writing it's mine

I just want to know if it's going to be a drama when I fill out the paperwork. I've never seen the papers before, so don't know if I have to put the current owner-which is no one.

If you go onto NZTA online, go to 'Ive bought a car", it will ask for your details and the car details. I cant remember after that if it asks for the seller details, but give it a go and see what happens. There is a small charge to get it in your name, so have a c/card and your licence handy. Give it a go and see what happens!
