Where did the $250 000 go?!

richardmayes, Jul 9, 2:02am
Beautiful car, and to be honest that is the only model of BMW that has ever really turned my head. But if they're $189k now I won't be investing.

Drool.

Beamers always did depreciate in a hurry.

gpg58, Jul 9, 3:40am
I thought modified from original spec cars, were worth a mere fraction of totally standard, as factory supplied ones, regardless of who did mods(matching numbers and all).
After-all not as though it has a race history, or famous owner.

Nice !
Not at that money for me though. I prefer the 635's anyway.
There is a nice Tiger for sale there also (not cheap either) !

poppy62, Jul 9, 5:16am
Recently sold my one (same colour). One of the best looking BMW coupes. Not a lot left and they're a superb cruiser. With the ludicrous prices being asked for some Bread & Butter stuff (Oz/ Jap) these Coupes are in a different league, same as the Pagoda roofed Mercs.

It is the labour cost that chews the budget. Many hours for the tear down, prep and resto and rebuild.

supernova2, Jul 9, 6:03am
$250K and the bonnet still doesn't fit properly

trogedon, Jul 9, 6:48am
I agree. They should never had changed the engine - enthusiasts in the '80s when that was done would've known not to do it.

trogedon, Jul 9, 6:50am
Not $250k though. Even at the highest prices for jobs (and surely the running gear wouldn't have needed doing) it would be nothing like that. I don't really care - I won't be buying it but the $$ boggles my little mind.

djrandomguy, Jul 9, 8:59am
had an opportunity to by a barn case example when I was a teen, kicking myself now

the-lada-dude, Jul 9, 7:29pm
same thought as others . > . and a new 3.3 Litre M30 engine, giving it more power and reliability; a popular upgrade at the time.

ruined !, unless you could supply the original ?

dublo, Jul 9, 8:16pm
Our '99 Honda Accord V6's 3 litre engine delivers as much power as that BMW one, and at only 5500rpm!

poppy62, Jul 9, 8:56pm
Good comparison! perhaps you should advertise your car for $190K. and don't forget to stress the extra HP, should help clinch the deal.

poppy62, Jul 9, 9:03pm
I won't be buying it but the $$ boggles my little mind.

Much the same as some nondescript works of art ( so called) sells for hundreds of millions? Rather drive this for $190K than hang the $400m "Scream' on my wall.

trogedon, Jul 9, 11:40pm
Some cars have an 'artistic' unique subjective value, this is just a car, nice but not particularly rare so the $$ should be justified in parts / time.

poppy62, Jul 10, 1:13am
Rarer than you imagine. They are all just Cars (or paintings) just some are more sort after and this E9 Coupe is one of them. According to "clark20" car numbers in NZ. Total of 29 E9 coupes with 12 of those the 3.0 CSi model.

the-lada-dude, Jul 10, 1:53am
you could nail the bemmer to the wall and rev it to 9000 rpm, and have the best of both ' screamers '.

saxman99, Jul 10, 2:09am
That version of the M30 engine began production in 1973, with the basic design going back to 1968. Peak power is produced at 5500rpm. Not much gain for 20 or 30 years really.

trogedon, Jul 10, 4:10am
I know there isn't many of them but there is only ONE Mona Lisa, Van Gogh's Irises, Olive Trees etc.

poppy62, Nov 30, 10:19pm
You're dreaming Trog, I've seen hundreds of the above for sale and they have all been restored to look better than the originals and they're as cheap as chips. As Picasso (reportedly) said when asked why he painted abstracts (rather than his actual excellent 'master pieces"). As long as the idiots keep buying them I'll keep painting them.
