Hard to speculate what may or may not have happened. I don't think I could count up the number of times I have had to take evasive action to avoid head ons both in my vehicles or on the bike, and I constantly drill it into my wife. When you have oncoming traffic, blind corners, whatever, then the road and your driving demands 100% attention because you just do not know. On one occasion we were travelling and she was driving because I was recovering from a rolled ankle and couldn't use the clutch and a clown in a Range Rover comes casually cruising over a yellow lined blind rise over taking completely on our side of the road, all she did was brake as hard as she could and pulled hard onto the shoulder to create room for the clown while she released a few expletives relating to his pedigree . all I had to say was there ya go, if you weren't watching out for a clown he would have converted us into a statistic.

I had a car try and merge in to me (wasn't paying attention didn't see me) when I was in my LHD convertible. A fist smack to their drivers window certainly woke them up! (was all I had time to do and just instinct)

What would an autonomous vehicle do if the driver was asleep, and a human driven car crossed the centerline into its path? Would it have the computing power to take evasive action or would it just brake and stay between the lines?

Dont know but i moved from left to right lane on aucklands motorway and i had at least 10 meter gap This car seemed to smoke is tyres or someting wierd and flashed its lights when i looked closer it was a T tesla i was thinking are tesla driver morons or arrogant or is that car try to warn me or something.

I would act on instinct, from years of driving. Keep left. If I go right, and the other car does the same, in an accident I am on the wrong side of the road. I am at fault because unless I have a car cam, he has the law on his side.

Lol, are you trolling mate. I wouldn't have taken evasive action, but I would have flashed my lights, and I would have reduced speed to take myself back to the legal following distance. I would hazard a guess that the Tesla has picked you up as being a hazard, and I'm leaning towards agreeing with the Tesla . if the driver of the Tesla wasn't taking a lot of notice because he/she was relying on the Tesla's systems there is a chance that they may have needed a change of jocks as well, so it could well have been the 'driver' flashing the headlights once they were awake again courtesy of your marginal manoeuvre.

Playing chicken is your only option. Hope that he is in a multipla and you are in a Kenworth if you have the time for anything at all.

Even the best of drivers have limited options when there is an idiot coming on your side of the road, Possum Bourne springs to mind.

Yep, it doesn't matter how good a driver we think we might be, how careful we might be, how vigilant we might be, how much technology our vehicle may possess, there is always going to be situations that due to time place and bad luck we don't have any options . there but for fortune go I.

Agrees and adds re post#3 [driving skills-*I'm going THIS way fool*] By far the commonest experience (Has happened to me personally MANY times) Is the old standard issue 2 lane blacktop no passing lanes and some iriot thinking WRONGLY they can overtake a truck and trailer. Seeing this in front of you and doing the wash off speed indicate flash lights EXTREME off road LEFT as far as possible generally means the truckie checks their mirrors and moves over a tad and the road has ALWAYS been wide enough for 3 vehicles so far in my life(Touch Wood) HOWEVER in an IMMINENT UN-Avoidable situation as crazy as it may seem to some the last second swerve RIGHT can put the impact point more to the left hand side and give just that fraction of survive ability –Again I write from personal experience

And in the split second you have to make the decision to swerve right, do you check to see if there is any traffic that you will suddenly be facing head on in their lane? No. By instinct you go left, far as you can. Off road if necessary. If there is no room, then unfortunately, sometimes luck is not on your side.

Not suggesting it's the right thing to do but.
My two sons were out riding their trail bikes up near houhora and the younger who was in front looked back to see how far behind his brother was. cause you know what young fellahs are like. and he didn't notice the corner coming up fast or the fifty Km sign. He got around the corner just but was on the wrong side of the road with a tour bus looming down on him, and realised he wasn't going to be able to get back to his side in time so he changed tack and drove off the far side of the road down into the big drains they have up there, crossed the bike up and was powering sideways along the drain waiting for the bus to pass so he could hook it back up onto the road. He glanced up and the whole side of the bus was full of tourists gawking out of the windows expecting to see carnage. When they were telling me about it later younger reckoned. "yeah, had to feel a bit sorry for the bus driver. He looked like he was going to have a heart attack". I gave him a good lecture.
So maybe there are situations when going right is the best thing to do.

According to plod if no proof then you are guilty &. he gets his quota up for the day . Dont agree with him then free to defend it it in court @ time $$ . Iread of 1 where driver had a sneezing fit & same thing happened . As far as plod is concerned we are all liars .
