What to buy, what to buy?

Why will petrol prices continue to increase and relative to what?

mongolia1, Jul 15, 4:50am
Because the same legislation that has allowed Auckland Council to impose a regional fuel tax can be used by any council and it will be too tempting for them not to. Also as announced yesterday if NZ is to reach the Paris climate change agreement to reduce carbon emissions converting the entire car fleet to EVs is the only sure way to achieve that. That almost certainly means higher taxes on ICE cars and increased taxes on petrol/diesel and incentives to buy EVs. Remember National has agreed to support climate change initiatives and it was they who introduced no RUCs on EVs until at least 2021 so don't expect a change in government will change things.

thejazzpianoma, Jul 15, 4:54am
Not to mention Jacinda is a devout socialist. That means taxation will have to keep going up to support her agenda.

meow_mix, Jul 15, 4:55am
Oh dear.

Here come the Euro brigade with their endless list of knackered old German luxury cars for the poor OP to consider. The guy is looking at keeping the car for some time, those Benzes will be falling apart at the seams in five years, not to mention the trans failures.

I would go for the Subaru Legacy, they are built to last, I should know my 1993 Legacy is 25 years old and still very reliable, flys through it's warrants.

..james.., Jul 15, 4:57am
Honda Euro? Or accord?

db.price, Jul 15, 5:06am
If it is the sedan you want then I would have to say that the Legacy would be a great choice. I really liked the Outback when looking last year but we ended up going for the CX5. The Subaru has the best safely systems available with eye sight. Just works well. They have a CVT gearbox but it did not feel like a CVT.

However that said the Mazda 6 2.5l turbo is meant to be one of the best sedans on the market currently. Mazda has come a huge distance in the last 5 years with their cars and are rated very highly. We love our CX 5.

I think either the Mazda or the Subaru would suit you well.

I am recently retired and have just built a new house in Nelson. I installed solar PV panels in the roof and run a Prius PHEV. We are home most days and charge the car from the PVs. With no RUCs it is basically free motoring. However much petrol is taxed the government cannot tax the sun.

Whatever you decide to buy I would avoid a Skoda TDI. The Department of Conservation (who I used to do work for) had a fleet of Octavias including the 4wd Scout. Proved to be an expensive mistake - not particularly reliable and horrendously expensive to service especially in the South Island. All the West Coast based ones needed to go to Christchurch for a service! They are all now being replaced by Hyundai I 30s and Corolla Hybrids.

If not the Legacy would you also consider the WRX? Seems to have a lot of boxes ticked and I am very tempted by Subaru’s AWD and iSight system.
New house being built is in Blenheim. Don’t think snow tyres would be vital. Honda dealer in Auckland totally not willing to talk deals. Price is the price.
Looked at Camry and new Commodore and felt we were just staying in same large car.

cjohnw, Jul 15, 5:19am
Yes, agree and that is the way we are leaning to be honest. Will probably come down to what deal can be negotiated. Someone above suggested the Mazda6 may be too new to get it at our price point and that is probably very true and might be the advantage for the Subaru. Cheers.

meow_mix, Jul 15, 5:20am
The WRX is another good choice, but they are a bit smaller and not as luxurious as the Legacy. Also the WRX is a serious performance car so that is good if you like the power. If it was me looking to own a new car for some time, again I would go for the 2.5L Legacy.

There is also the Subaru Levorg:

Looks like you better hang on to your '93 S/box Subaru Legacy as there aren't many left on the road, only 4 listed on TM. starting from $250. Good? beneficiaries cars.

bwg11, Jul 15, 5:39am
Have you considered the "new" V6 Camry? It is a sedan, not a hatch and is under $50k, 224 kW, 8 speed box and has the legendary Toyota reliability. Only downside is that it is FWD.

nzdoug, Jul 15, 5:47am
PRIUS PHEV or HATCH HYBRID.
You will go far.

Might go a little over budget but I can't see how you'd resist:

The Mazda 6 Turbo looks like a superbly engineered car. I was watching this video just the other day: https://youtu.be/onqlfzi0Rso

meow_mix, Jul 15, 6:19am
Yeah thanks, my Legacy is no S/box mate, it happens to be a top-of-the-line RS model with the sequential twin turbo 183kw engine. It is built so well that the complicated engine has never missed a beat, let's see a Euro car do that. I was at Ray Hartley Motors last year getting the cambelt done and they told me the old twin turbo Legacys are going up in price because they are so rare now, a bit like with the old Skylines appreciating in value.

A further thought - I used to live in Blenheim and am now in Nelson. Blenheim is a great place to live but the summers can be hot and parked cars can get really hot. The brilliant thing about the Prius PHV is that you can turn on the air con from the key fob from 100m away and cool the car down before you get in it. The a/c runs off the main lithium ion battery At first I thought it was a gimmick but it is surprisingly useful. No ICE car that I know of can do that.

cjohnw, Jul 15, 6:47am
I appreciate what you are trying to convey in suggesting the Prius, however it just doesn’t appeal at all, especially to her indoors.
We fancy a bit more luxury than it offers and at this time of life the money isn’t the main consideration. BTW the new build already has solar heating in the spec. But thanks for the suggestion.

meow_mix, Jul 15, 6:48am
Try looking at my profile pic and say that. Mate my RS blew away a 1999-ish Audi S6 at the lights like I wasn't even trying. So nyaaa.

cjohnw, Jul 15, 6:50am
Lol. Wife says nah, but I say, . hell yes!

thejazzpianoma, Jul 15, 6:53am
That's cheating you said no Fiats!

kazbanz, Jul 15, 7:14am
cjohnw-I thought the same way as you do about the Prius.--until I drove an 1800 I thought--This aint bad at all. but maybe you prefer the camry instead-atill hybrid.

mongolia1, Jul 15, 7:28am
All good. Well done for including the solar heating. I installed the PVs and got the Prius PHV not so much to save money but thinking of the future climate issues my grandchildren will have to deal with. I don't want to say I did nothing when they ask me in 20 years what did you do to try to prevent it grandad?

tamarillo, Jul 15, 7:42am
Don't think accord is current new in NZ. New car in states but not due for quick release here.
